Your care table
| Topic | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Sunny; acclimatise slowly after a change of position. | Strong light keeps growth compact. |
| Water | Allow to dry well between waterings. | The plant is adapted to dry periods. |
| Drainage | Use a pot with holes and remove leftover water. | Standing moisture endangers the rosette base. |
| Compost | Choose structurally stable succulent compost with mineral components providing free drainage. | Roots should receive air again quickly. |
| Feeding | Feed sparingly during growth according to the label. | Slow growth does not need heavy nutrient applications. |
| Summer | Keep outdoors in sunshine, stable and protected from persistent rain. | Light is beneficial; continually wet compost is not. |
| Winter | Keep bright, frost-free and much drier. | Cool conditions and limited light reduce consumption. |
| Handling | Keep clear of the firm leaf tips; do not eat. | Even small rosettes can cause injury. |
An agave with very narrow foliage
Agave striata looks different from the broad-leaved agaves of many holiday memories. Numerous narrow leaves form a dense rosette, drawing fine lines into the space. The listing names the compact form Nana. The firm tips must be taken seriously even on a small plant. Agaves belong to the asparagus family and are adapted to periods with limited water. Their clear shape develops best with sufficient light and an airy root zone.
Start compact and allow clearance
The offered plant is in a 12 cm pot. The checked shop text gives no reliable total height, so no centimetre measurement is inferred from the scene. Place it so hands, children and animals do not accidentally meet the tips. A sunny, sheltered terrace table may suit it in summer. Narrow walkways are less suitable. The decorative cachepot is included only if the listing expressly says so.
Plenty of light with sensible acclimatisation
Agaves need a bright to sunny position. After transport or an extended spell indoors, introduce direct summer sun gradually over several days. The rosette should remain compact; long, soft new leaves can indicate too little light. A summer position outside needs a secure base and protection from prolonged rain. Frost is avoided for this presentation grown here as a pot plant. Individual hardiness statements for other agaves cannot be transferred.
Watering intervals are part of care
Let the compost dry well between waterings. When needed, water it thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain freely. Water the root ball where possible rather than continually into the centre of the rosette. Much less is consumed on cool, low-light days. A dry surface alone does not establish a dry root ball in a heavy, dense pot. Lift the container and check carefully below the surface.
Mineral structure instead of heavy compost
Suitable succulent compost contains structurally stable mineral components and does not become a dense mass that stays wet for a long time. Drainage holes are essential; a gravel layer in a closed container does not replace them. When repotting, do not plant the rosette base deeper, and use tools or sturdy gloves to keep clear of the tips. Move into a slightly larger pot only when more space is truly needed. During active growth, sparse feeding according to the label is sufficient.
Read winter rest and small warning signs
A bright, frost-free winter position with greatly reduced watering is better than a dark, constantly damp one. Soft leaf bases or an unpleasant smell from the root ball call for a root check. Remove dry outer old leaves carefully when they can be released safely. Check between leaves for mealybugs without forcing the rosette apart. The agave is not used as a home remedy or food. Its slow rhythm rewards a restrained hand.

Good to know
How large is the agave offered?
The 12 cm pot is confirmed. The checked shop details do not provide a reliable total height.
Can it stay outside through winter?
A bright, frost-free winter position is recommended for this potted plant. Information about other agave species is not a safe basis.
Why is the centre becoming soft?
Check for persistently damp compost or water at the rosette base. If rot is suspected, initially stop watering.
Is a closed cachepot sufficient?
Only as a cover for a pot with drainage holes. Excess water must be removed after watering.
