Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
SunChoose a warm sunny sheltered place. The open starburst needs free, clearly visible space.
SoilEnsure drainage throughout the planting area.Gravel on wet earth alone does not protect the bulb.
PlantingPlant in autumn with tip upwards. The bulb can root before the following spring.
DepthMeasure the actual bulb body and follow packaging.Commercial grade is not used as diameter.
SpacingPlan about 20–30 cm, or more generously for free heads. The open head can reach about 30 cm wide.
WaterWater during dry growth; remain restrained in dormancy.Active growth and summer rest have different needs.
After floweringLet foliage mature; retain dry heads if desired.Leaf care and decorative heads are separate tasks.
WinterConsider position and cold; protect containers from winter rain and strong frost. This species is less frost-tolerant than many tall garden ornamental onions.
1. Check moisture

For young plants, feel the soil directly at the root ball. The surface and deeper soil may have different moisture levels.

2. Water where needed

Water thoroughly after planting; later, water according to the soil, weather and establishment rather than a fixed calendar.

3. Check drainage

Avoid standing water. For plants in containers, also check that water runs out of the drainage hole.

Flowering leaves air between the stars

Allium schubertii looks like a firework paused in mid-air. Individual pink-purple star flowers sit on rays of noticeably different lengths. This creates an open flower head that may reach about 30 cm wide. It is no densely closed globe like many other ornamental onions. Even up close, individual lines remain visible. The plant becomes about 60 cm tall at flowering. A quiet background of stone or low greenery helps show the unusual form without hiding it among many equally striking flowers.

Five bulbs for a special planting place

The range offers five bulbs. Images show how flowers may look later and do not depict delivery condition. Plan sites before planting: broad open heads should not snag immediately beside a narrow path. About 20 to 30 cm spacing is a useful design guide; fully free-standing large heads may have more air. A small group in a gravel border or before a low wall often works better than a densely filled carpet. Later height is not the bulbs’ delivery height.

A warm sunny site with good drainage

Sun and especially permeable soil suit this ornamental onion. Where rain stands long among dense foliage and heavy earth, the underground bulb is unnecessarily stressed. Seek a sheltered place without a cold wet hollow. Surface gravel alone does not prove good drainage below. Check ground after rain and plan a raised planting area if needed. The open flower form is fine and broad; a very windy passage may strain it mechanically. Shelter from a sunny wall may therefore help.

Carry out autumn planting with judgement

Set bulbs in autumn in unfrozen ground, tip upwards. General ornamental-onion guidance uses about four times the actual bulb diameter; follow more precise delivered package instructions. A shop commercial size is not used unchecked as diameter. Settle soil and water a little if dry. Mark the site before other autumn work starts. Soil is easily checked in a sufficiently deep perforated container. Place this later so large radiating flowers are not broken by passers-by.

Supply during growth without overwatering dormancy

Observe shoots and soil together in spring. Prolonged dryness during growth may need thorough watering, particularly in containers. Further watering does not help already wet ground. Flowering falls in early summer and depends on spring conditions. During later summer rest, bulbs need no artificially permanently moist ground. Use fertiliser only moderately with recognisable need and according to the label. Many extra nutrients do not automatically produce more long flower rays. A suitable place matters more than frequent interventions on a healthy plant.

Dry stars may live on as a shape

After flowering the large open head can remain decorative. If it stays, ensure stems do not become a path obstruction. Remove by cutting the flower stem specifically without pulling on the bulb. Let basal foliage mature as fully as possible; remove only dead leaves. Dry flower form mixed with low greenery can pleasantly bridge the period after fresh flowering. The same rays can be recorded at several stages in the plant book. This changes perception of the species more than one flower photo.

More winter caution than with tougher ornamental onions

Allium schubertii is less frost-tolerant than some widespread tall ornamental onions. A blanket promise of overwintering everywhere without protection is therefore unsuitable. Garden cultivation is possible in mild sheltered places and very permeable soil. Consider protected container cultivation and a suitable cool winter position for colder or permanently wet sites. Avoid long winter rain and pot soil freezing severely through. Check actual local conditions before choosing a permanent site. Do not use ornamental bulbs as food or replant soft or foul-smelling specimens.

Good to know

Is the flower a dense globe?

No. Greatly differing flower-stalk lengths form an open starburst.

How large does the head grow?

About 30 cm wide under suitable conditions; the flowering plant about 60 cm tall.

What is delivered?

Five bulbs. Later flowering and companion plants are not a flowering delivery.

Is it hardy everywhere?

A blanket promise would be wrong. Allium schubertii needs more attention with strong frost and winter wetness.

Can the dry head stay?

Yes, if it does not obstruct the path. Let foliage mature separately.

Does the species suit a container?

Yes, in a sufficiently deep perforated container with suitable sunny cultivation and a planned sheltered winter position.
