Your care table
| Topic | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Choose sun with enough free room above. | White Giant may flower well above a metre high. |
| Wind | Plant sheltered from strong winds but not shaded. | Tall stems experience greater mechanical strain. |
| Planting | Plant in autumn in unfrozen ground. | Bulbs develop roots before sprouting. |
| Spacing | Keep at least about 20 cm and consider neighbouring growth. | Heads and stems need free space. |
| Depth | Use about four times actual bulb diameter or package guidance. | Commercial grade is not a direct depth measure. |
| Water | Water after soil checks during active growth and dryness. | Even supplies differ from permanently wet earth. |
| Foliage | Remove only after complete dieback. | Leaves and flowering have different visible phases. |
| Winter | Maintain drainage; protect containers additionally. | Winter wetness and frozen-through pot soil increase risk. |
For young plants, feel the soil directly at the root ball. The surface and deeper soil may have different moisture levels.
Water thoroughly after planting; later, water according to the soil, weather and establishment rather than a fixed calendar.
Avoid standing water. For plants in containers, also check that water runs out of the drainage hole.
White stands out against dark green
White Giant lifts dense white flower globes far above its basal leaves. Each little star-shaped flower has a green centre. Round heads become about 10 to 15 cm wide; the whole flowering plant may reach about 110 to 150 cm tall. Their bright outline shows well before a darker hedge or warm brick wall. It differs from low white border flowers: one long stem connects ground and head, while the space between stays open. Do not overfill this quiet structure.
A tall garden accent from five bulbs
You begin with five bulbs from the offer. Tall flowering plants or companion plants in the scene are not included. Lay out future sites to let you view white globes while passing without narrowing the path. The RHS states at least about 20 cm spacing. Large heads and tall neighbouring perennials may need further space. In the middle or back of the border, shoots stay accessible. Do not plant immediately beneath branches that might later brush stems and damage buds.
Tall stems do best in shelter
A sunny place with freely draining moisture is the foundation. Because flowers stand so high, wind shelter helps. Shelter does not mean darkness among dense woody plants. Check whether enough sun reaches the planting area when neighbouring plants are leafy. Inspect drainage in heavy ground first. Rain standing for days in a hollow poorly suits bulb cultivation. A deep perforated container can also work but must be stable and reliably carry later tall growth.
Prepare the bulb site in autumn
Plant in autumn in unfrozen soil before the garden freezes for a long period, bulb tip upwards. For White Giant the RHS recommends a depth about four times actual bulb diameter. Measure the real bulb body; a commercial grade is not a substitute. Follow more precise delivered instructions if present. Settle earth gently and water dry soil. Mark the position because little is visible above ground in winter. Future tall stems can then be considered when planting other perennials.
Do not confuse growth and flowering with constant wetness
In spring the plant develops anew from the bulb. During prolonged dryness check soil and water thoroughly where needed. Moisture in the active root zone helps shoots; a constantly wet pot is unnecessary. Rain may suffice in a border, while containers need more frequent checks. Add nutrients moderately and only as required. White flowering falls in early summer, sooner or later with weather. Tall growth is not evidence of nutrient deficiency or reason to fertilise more regardless of soil condition.
The leafy outfit retreats earlier
Long green leaves may yellow around flowering. With White Giant this is part of the seasonal transition. Let foliage mature as fully as possible and remove dead remains only later. Lower perennials direct the eye towards white globes without cutting green leaves. Dry heads may stay or be removed specifically. Cut the stem rather than pull the bulb. The distinction between flower height and leaf zone is especially clear in the plant book: both change through the year.
A perennial site needs attention
Bulbs can remain in the ground at a suitable permeable site. For the cold season chiefly avoid prolonged wetness and do not seal the area with dense damp coverings. Containers receive additional protection from severe freezing through and winter rain. This cultivar’s cold tolerance does not guarantee every unprotected position. If flowers fail, examine light, the previous year’s foliage and bulb site together. Do not use ornamental bulbs for cooking. A lasting marker helps preserve resting bulbs and their position during gardening.

Good to know
Are five tall plants in the package?
No. Five bulbs are delivered for later garden cultivation.
How tall does White Giant grow?
About 110 to 150 cm at flowering, depending on site and development.
Are flowers entirely white?
The small star flowers are white with a green centre.
Can I plant it beside a dark hedge?
A hedge is an attractive background if the planting site remains sunny and bulbs are not crowded.
Should yellow foliage go immediately?
No. Let it mature where possible and remove only once fully dead.
Can it overwinter in a pot?
With a sufficiently deep container, good drainage and additional shelter from severe cold and prolonged winter rain.
