Start with the right species
Carnivorous plants come from different habitats. First identify the species on the plant label. A tropical pitcher plant has different needs from a Venus flytrap.
Low-mineral water and a suitable growing medium
Use clean rainwater if possible. Ordinary fertilised potting compost is unsuitable for many carnivorous plants; use a low-nutrient growing medium suited to the species. Do not routinely add standard houseplant fertiliser.
Not every plant stands in water
Many bog species like very wet conditions during the growing season. Tropical Nepenthes, however, need a moist, airy growing medium and should not stand in water. Do not keep the whole set permanently in the same water-filled saucer.
Plan winter care separately
Venus flytraps and many trumpet pitcher plants need an appropriate cool dormant period. Tropical Nepenthes stay warm and bright with indirect light. Butterworts and sundews also have different needs depending on the species. The exact species determines the winter position.
Good to know
Can I plant all the species together in one bowl?
Only if their needs really match. Separate pots are the more flexible choice for a mixed starter set.
Do I have to feed the plants?
Regular feeding is normally unnecessary. Do not trigger traps for fun or put food into them.
