Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightVery bright; introduce direct sun gradually.A young plant from sheltered cultivation may not tolerate sudden strong sun.
WaterDuring growth, water only after good root-ball drying.Water reserves do not replace a healthy airy root space.
DrainageLet all water drain and empty the outer pot.Standing water may damage root and shoot bases.
CompostStructurally stable freely draining cactus mix with mineral content.Fine compacted compost stays wet too long in the small pot.
FeedModerately during active growth according to the product.Pause during winter rest.
WinterBright and frost-free, watering considerably less often.Cool wet roots are particularly at risk.
Growth formDo not compress or smooth folds and ribs. The individual shape is the special ornament of this form.
ChecksWatch for mealybugs, unusually thin new growth and soft dark patches.Early checks distinguish insufficient light or root problems from normal ageing.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

An individual shape rather than even columns

The green surface forms irregular ribs, bumps and closely neighbouring shoots. Pale areoles and small brownish spines emphasise the structure. The shop names Cereus peruvianus cristata. The RHS assigns similar names to the Monstrosus complex. However, the original does not show a regular large fan on a visible grafting stem. We therefore describe the rocky form actually shown and do not promise a particular fan crown. Such horticultural growth forms can look markedly different from plant to plant.

Read the two size figures together transparently

According to the shop, the pot diameter is 5.5 cm. The short and longer descriptions give differing overall-height figures, so they do not establish a confirmed height. The scene shows a small cactus without claiming a precise height. It does not show a large mature sculpture. The specific shop information governs any precise current size requirement. Decoration and outer pot are not automatically guaranteed components of delivery.

A bright position for compact structures

A very bright position and direct sunshine after acclimatisation help retain strong new growth. Increase sunshine slowly after shipping or prolonged darker conditions. Light and air can reach closely spaced ribs differently, so look at the whole plant rather than just its most attractive front. A warm outdoor position sheltered from rain is possible in summer. This small trade form is not treated as a winter-hardy garden cactus. Bring it indoors before cold nights and overwinter in bright frost-free conditions.

Moisture must not collect at the base

During active growth, water after the soil dries well and allow excess to drain. Closely folded forms should not remain constantly wet at their bases. A heavy compacted mix or water in the outer pot can encourage problems there. The small pot dries faster in warmth than in a cool low-light winter position; frequency changes accordingly. Water much more cautiously in winter. Do not introduce a blanket daily misting routine. The root ball condition matters, rather than the unusual shape of the above-ground shoots.

Repot without pressure on the folded shoots

A freely draining cactus mix with mineral structure and a pot with drainage holes are sensible. Protect yourself from the small spines with suitable aids when repotting, and do not firmly squeeze irregular parts. Give only a little more root space when actually needed. Fertilise sparingly during growth according to the product instructions. Healthy roots and strong tissue are the aim, not inflating the cactus body as quickly as possible. Do not apply leaf shine or brush the pale areoles.

Normal unusual growth or a new problem

Irregular ribs and branches are expected for this form. Rapidly appearing soft brown tissue or an unpleasant rotten smell, however, do not belong to a Cristata form. Check roots and watering then. Small mealybugs can hide in protected folds; regular close observation helps. A flower or a particular future ultimate form is not guaranteed. If healthy shoot pieces are later removed for propagation, their cut surfaces must dry sufficiently before rooting. The small cactus needs no shaping cuts for normal care.

Good to know

Will I receive a large flat fan?

The original images show a small irregular rocky form. A particular evenly shaped fan crown is not guaranteed.

Which height is correct?

The shop’s height figures conflict, so the overall height is unconfirmed. For a precise current height, consult the offer and ask the shop to confirm.

Are the bumps a disease?

The irregular shape belongs to the growth form. Newly appearing soft dark spots must be distinguished from it.

Should the shape be cut regularly?

No. Routine shaping cuts are not necessary for this small cactus.
