Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
PositionBright; light should also reach the pot and shoot bases.Dark tops of hanging plants become sparse more easily.
WaterAllow substantial drying between applications.Storage organs buffer short dry spells; persistent wetness is harmful.
CompostUse a loose, well-drained succulent mix.Free drainage matters more than a large water reserve.
NutrientsFeed weakly during growth according to fertiliser instructions.More fertiliser does not compensate for insufficient light.
WinterBright and frost-free; reassess water demand substantially.Still do not leave small pots to dry completely without checking.
Shoot careUntangle strings without pulling and carefully shorten when needed.Fine branches break when pulled hard.
RepottingMove into a slightly larger pot only when needed.Too much unrooted compost stays wet for a long time.
CheckingCompare new leaf spacing, the pot’s top and the roots.Lack of light and wetness can both lead to a sparse plant.

A delicate appearance with reserves

String of hearts combines delicate shoots with succulent properties. Its small, paired heart-shaped leaves carry silver patterns; a purple tone may be visible underneath. Storage tubers also help it cope with fluctuating water supplies. Ceropegia woodii belongs to the dogbane family and comes from southern Africa. A close look reveals further small tubers on some older shoots: a charming detail of this seemingly feather-light hanging plant.

Arrange it to hang without promising a length

The linked offer describes a plant in a 10 cm hanging pot. No binding shoot length is stated, so we do not derive a centimetre measurement from the image. An open shelf, a bright hanging position or a tall plant stand shows the strings well. Enough room below is important. Shoots should neither rest on a hot lamp nor become trapped in a door. Individual density may differ from the scene image.

The strings of leaves are not the only parts needing light

With hanging plants it is easy to overlook how dark the compost surface is directly beneath a ceiling or shelf. If only the lower part receives light, the top can gradually look sparse. Choose a position where the shoot bases are bright too. After delivery, acclimatise gradually to direct sun. Very long gaps between leaves are a reason to improve light rather than merely adding fertiliser.

Distinguish drying between waterings from complete desiccation

Let the compost dry substantially between waterings without leaving the small hanging pot to dry out completely for weeks. The shop recommendation emphasises sparing watering; the specialist source also describes dry periods between applications. Lifting the pot helps in practice: check again only when it has become noticeably lighter. Then water evenly and let it drain. Consumption falls in winter. Thin, soft leaves alone are not a reliable instruction to water when the compost is wet at the same time.

Pot loosely and arrange shoots gently

A well-drained succulent mix protects against compacted, persistent wetness. A very large decorative pot offers no advantage to a small root mass. To untangle it, set the pot down securely and separate the strings without pulling; they can break easily at branches. Overlong healthy shoots can be shortened. Pieces with suitable nodes can be used for propagation. Monitoring new roots is easier in spring or summer than during a low-light resting period.

Details reveal how it is doing

Tubular flowers are possible on well-developed plants but are not automatically part of the delivered condition. Cotton-like deposits or small firm scales on shoots should be examined more closely. In sparse hanging plants, check light at the top and root condition first. If the plant continues healthy growth, restrained fertiliser applications during the growing period are sufficient. Our gardening focus is mainly on new leaf pairs: they show more clearly than old shoots whether the chosen care suits it.

Good to know

How long is the offered string of hearts?

The 10 cm hanging pot is verified. The offer does not state a binding shoot length.

Why is it becoming bare at the top?

First check whether enough light reaches the shoot bases. Root problems caused by wetness can also play a part.

What are the little balls on the shoots?

They may be storage tubers, which are part of natural development. They do not automatically indicate a pest infestation.

Can I shorten the long shoots?

Yes, healthy shoots can be cut gently. Suitable pieces with nodes can be used for propagation.
