Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightPlace in sun to partial shade.Sufficient light supports strong fresh growth.
SoilPlant in humus-rich nutrient-rich free-draining soil.Roots require moisture and air.
WaterWater during growth according to root-ball condition.Small pots dry faster than garden soil.
DrainageAvoid waterlogging after rain and watering.Constant wetness threatens storage organs.
HarvestCut outer leaves and retain green reserves. The clump needs leaf mass for fresh growth.
NutrientsSupply moderately during growth.Too much fertiliser quickly burdens a small pot.
WinterShelter small containers with unobstructed drainage.Bed hardiness does not guarantee unprotected pots.
UseWash clearly identified leaves and use fresh.Kitchen use requires confident plant identification.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

Garlic scent without replanting every year

Gartenknofi is offered as a perennial Allium hybrid. Flat green leaves bring garlic flavour to the kitchen while underground storage organs enable renewed growth. Botanically, it belongs to the amaryllis family. It is not the same as garlic-scented Tulbaghia, also sold as garlic grass. Exact parent species for Gartenknofi are not confirmed here. We therefore describe the offered cultivated form without attributing a supposedly certain crossing formula.

A young plant for a bed or herb pot

The offer includes a 12 cm pot. The stated 30 to 50 cm describes possible growth height, not guaranteed delivery height. The scene shows the young leafy plant in an appropriate pot; an already flowering specimen is not promised. For lasting pot cultivation, later offer more root room. Ideally place Gartenknofi where passing people do not constantly bend leaves and harvesting remains convenient.

Sun and good soil produce strong leaves

Choose a sunny to partly shaded place with humus-rich nutrient-rich free-draining soil. Moisten the root ball before planting and water thoroughly afterwards. Heavy compacted areas are less suitable; water should drain again after rain. A pot needs unobstructed drainage holes. On warm days, the root ball dries noticeably faster in the small delivery container than in a bed. Check regularly rather than treating it indiscriminately like a drought-loving Mediterranean herb.

Harvest without exhausting the clump

Cut healthy outer leaves with clean scissors and leave enough green leaf mass and the plant’s heart. Small regular harvests suit better than repeated complete cutting. Washed leaves can be finely chopped fresh and used, for example, in herb quark or savoury dishes. Start with little, as desired seasoning is a matter of taste. Harvest only clearly identified plant parts; this kitchen portrait makes no medical promises.

Flowers and winter rest belong to the yearly cycle

Under suitable conditions, violet rounded flower heads appear, also interesting to pollinating insects. Timing and abundance depend on development and site. The manufacturer’s high winter-hardiness statement does not apply to every possible pot situation. A small freestanding pot may freeze completely or become waterlogged. Allow good establishment in the garden; shelter containers in winter and insulate the root zone if needed. A resting plant needs markedly less water than freshly growing foliage.

Small checks for lasting enjoyment

In spring, gently remove dead leaf remains and supply moderate nutrients as growth begins. Compost in the bed or herb-suitable fertiliser according to its label are options; a generous fertiliser reserve in a small pot is unnecessary. Older dense clumps may be divided in suitable condition. First assess yellow leaves in relation to season, wetness and root room. Soft rotting bases and permanently wet soil call for correcting water balance, not more fertiliser.

Good to know

Is Gartenknofi the same as garlic grass?

No. Gartenknofi is an Allium hybrid; garlic grass is offered as Tulbaghia.

Is 30 to 50 cm the delivery height?

No. That describes growth height. No definite delivery height is stated for the 12 cm pot.

Can I cut all leaves at once?

Leave enough healthy leaves during normal harvesting so the plant can keep gathering strength.

Can the small pot simply overwinter outside?

A sheltered position and insulated root zone are sensible. Winter hardiness of an established bed plant cannot be directly transferred to the small pot.
