Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightModerate filtered light, no blazing sun.The foliage plant needs a protected position.
MoistureKeep the root ball reliably lightly moist.Macodes is not cultivated with long dry phases.
WaterApply slowly to soil and allow to drain.Keeping moist does not mean leaving it in water.
ClimateWarm, without abrupt draught changes.Even cultivation supports the young plant.
Growing mediumFree-draining, moisture-retentive terrestrial orchid mixture.Water and air for roots must work together.
FertiliserFeed cautiously during growth according to the label. The 6 cm root ball is not strongly fertilised as a precaution.
RepottingA suitable shallow container when needed.Actual rooting determines the need.
LeavesInspect the young tip and leaf undersides gently. The few leaves are not used as a handle.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

A pale stripe opens a view into the leaf

Pearl shows a broad pale centre on its dark oval leaves. Fine cream-coloured lines branch from there into the darker margins. A young rolled leaf sits among the already open leaves, and the short shoots appear reddish. The original therefore shows a specific foliage selection, not just any green orchid. The shop name is Macodes petola Pearl. Pearl remains the trade name. The pale areas are not embellished with an invented flower or an additional variety promise.

Seven to nine centimetres deserve a sense of scale

The young plant sits in a 6 cm pot; total height is roughly seven to nine centimetres. Its few leaves should remain visible and accessible for checks when positioning it. A small warm terracotta tone can emphasise the pale leaf stripe. The inner pot must be removable from the outer pot. A very tall covering would needlessly conceal the young crown. Hold the container rather than the shoot when unpacking. A newly rolled leaf in particular must not serve as a handle.

A quiet environment for a tropical terrestrial orchid

Macodes is a terrestrial orchid genus with striking leaf-vein markings. For cultivation, choose moderate, filtered light, warmth and conditions as even as possible. Avoid cold draughts and abrupt dry phases. This does not mean Pearl should stand in a dark cupboard. A bright plant position with gentle light and no blazing sun reveals the markings. Monitor warmth in a terrarium too. Position the small plant so its root ball can be checked without bending the crown every time.

Keep lightly moist and let water drain away again

Check the root zone regularly and keep it reliably lightly moist. A prolonged complete dry phase does not suit this cultivation. Nevertheless, water is not collected in the outer pot. Apply slowly to soil and remove excess. Surface moss may give an impression of lasting freshness while conditions below differ. Therefore check an accessible spot and pot weight. If a leaf yields, first consider moisture and position; do not blindly pour extra water into an already wet root ball.

A foliage miniature does not become a decorative object

The medium must retain moisture and drain freely. When more space is needed later, a suitable, fairly shallow container helps rather than a large pot full of unused wet soil. Apply fertiliser cautiously during visible growth according to a suitable orchid label. Do not treat the few leaves with polishing products or wipe them unnecessarily. Check short shoot bases and leaf undersides. A compact, attractive position remains sensible only if air and care can still reach the plant.

Get to know Pearl more closely

Continue caring for the tropical plant under protection indoors or in suitable glass cultivation. Images show foliage; current flowering is not part of the delivery promise. Keep monitoring root ball and warmth in winter rather than imposing a harsh dry rest. Compare the first pale leaf with later photographs in the plant book. Record the position and unfolding of the next tip in particular. A pale leaf centre is this selection’s character, not an instruction to correct every new colour nuance with an extra care measure.

Good to know

Why does Pearl have a pale leaf centre?

The original shows this striking leaf pattern of the offered selection.

Must it become completely dry?

No. Macodes is kept reliably lightly moist, with free drainage.
