Your care table
| Topic | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Choose sun to light partial shade. | Fine white flowers stand out against a quiet background. |
| Soil | Use free-draining compost or loose garden soil. | Moisture and air in the root area belong together. |
| Planting | Plant about 10 cm deep in autumn. | Consider packaging and real bulb size. |
| Spacing | Allow about 5–7 cm in borders. | A densely planted display container is planned differently. |
| Watering | Supply according to soil condition during growth. | Small containers dry faster. |
| Nutrients | Supplement when needed according to the label and existing reserves. | Pre-fertilised compost does not immediately demand more fertiliser. |
| After flowering | Retain green foliage until yellowing. | The leaf phase serves the bulb after the display phase. |
| Division | Redistribute healthy, overly dense groups in summer. | Dormancy makes work on the group easier. |
For young plants, feel the soil directly at the root ball. The surface and deeper soil may have different moisture levels.
Water thoroughly after planting; later, water according to the soil, weather and establishment rather than a fixed calendar.
Avoid standing water. For plants in containers, also check that water runs out of the drainage hole.
Green buds become white pearls
White Magic brings a pale grape hyacinth to the spring garden. Its small urn-shaped individual flowers open from pale green buds. While white already appears below, the tip may remain green. Narrow leaves, initially fairly upright, accompany them. Later height is roughly 15 to 20 centimetres. A low container on a garden step or a group against a darker background makes this colour change clear. The shop name White Magic remains; the RHS lists the variety under Muscari aucheri. It is not a claim of white flowers for any arbitrary blue grape hyacinth.
Fifty bulbs for several pale spots
50 bulbs for planting are delivered. Flower pictures are examples of later development, not a ready-planted bowl included in delivery. Decide whether to create a connected border group or several smaller containers. In borders, roughly five to seven centimetres spacing is a guide. A dense spring container needs its own planning of depth and root space. The whole quantity need not occupy one small bowl. Beside a bench, a well-placed subgroup is often enough to observe emergence close up.
A bright position with reliable drainage
Sun or light partial shade suit White Magic. A bright garden step may lie in a rain shadow, however, while an open border regularly gets wet. Assess light and water together. Soil should hold moisture during growth but drain freely. Containers need open holes; check saucers after rain and watering. A windy position can dry soil faster even when air is cool. Do not put low flowers directly behind dense tall foliage. Otherwise the fine white forms disappear before their brief display is properly noticed.
The white spring group begins in autumn
Plant in autumn in unfrozen ground, roughly ten centimetres deep and tips upwards. Follow delivered packaging and actual bulbs. Trade size classes are not reinterpreted as measured diameters. Loosen the area, settle soil carefully and water a little if dry. A container for several years needs enough compost and free drainage holes. Mark border groups before their above-ground disappearance in summer. Later perennial planting beside them can then proceed without accidentally digging through dormant bulbs or making new deep holes in the same spot.
Water and nutrients during the leaf phase
Active emerging growth needs moisture without waterlogging. Check containers after the last white flowers while leaves stay green. In borders, water additionally if prolonged dryness reaches the root area. Suitable amounts follow soil, rain and container size, not a rigid weekday. Consider nutrients in the compost and supplement when needed according to the fertiliser label. More supply does not make a shaded position a good flowering site. Requirements change after natural dying back. A dormant bowl is therefore not kept constantly moist like an actively growing spring group.
Finished flowering is not finished care
White flowers may be removed after their display, but foliage stays until natural yellowing. Do not cut it off together with faded stalks. Keep a container bright after presentation and check its soil. Later perennials can accompany the transition in a border without immediately shading all green leaves. A detail photograph of the pale green tip and white lower flowers makes a lovely comparison for the plant book. Store unplanted bulbs separately from food; they are ornamental planting material, not a kitchen supply.
Accompany a pale variety over the years
White Magic is perennial and forms groups over time. Healthy bulbs that become overcrowded can be separated and redistributed during summer dormancy. Before such work, check whether weaker flowering relates to shade, premature leaf removal or unsuitable water management. A container is more exposed to winter weather than a garden border and needs a sheltered, well-drained position. Keep drainage open. Record flowering and yellowing in your own garden. The personal annual rhythm is more useful for care than a supposedly always suitable month number.
