Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
BrightnessPlace in bright filtered daylight.Outer striped leaves also need light.
TankSupply with soft water in warm growing conditions. The leaf centre forms a water location.
ExchangeRenew the water regularly and remove remains.Do not keep topping up stale water indefinitely.
RootsSlightly moist with free drainage.A cover pot must not retain a permanent puddle.
SoilChoose a loose bromeliad mix.The small root base needs air.
NutrientsFeed moderately according to the label.Do not put solid grains in the tank.
WinterKeep indoors frost-free; check use.Summer conditions do not continue unchanged.
RosettesLet offsets grow sufficiently before division. The mother plant can decline after flowering.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

A star of green, cream and pink

Franca opens its long leaves like an irregular star. Green bands and creamy-white edges run along the leaves while the centre shows strong pink. Curved tips give the markings movement. The plant can look good on a bright open bookshelf provided the crown stays free and receives enough daylight. One quiet compartment is often more attractive than a densely filled decorative surface. Then the light striping can be followed right out to the outer leaves.

Pot size and crown diameter are different measurements

In the assortment Franca stands in a 12 cm pot. Overall height is about 30 cm; the leaf crown is listed at about 30 to 40 cm in diameter. These measurements explain the spreading shape and do not specify mature size. Support the container when unpacking without folding striped leaves backwards. Plan a clear margin around the cover pot. A larger ceramic bowl may be decorative but does not mean the nursery pot must immediately be transplanted into an equivalent extra volume of soil.

Light reaches the outer leaf stripes too

Indoor growing receives bright filtered daylight in a warm position. On a shelf, also check whether upper boards cast deep shade over the crown. Do not put light leaf areas in hot sun straight after shipping. Gentle acclimatisation is better than an abrupt move from dark to scorching. Avoid draughts during airing and cold surfaces. Leaf patterns are individual; a new leaf need not copy its neighbours’ exact sequence of stripes to fit the plant.

Supply the rosette centre deliberately

Franca has a tank between its inner leaves. In warm bright conditions, use soft water and exchange it regularly. Remove fallen remains when renewing it. Check the root ball and container bottom at the same time. Slight moisture around roots is not permanent saturation. A drainage hole must stay clear even if the nursery pot sits in a closed decorative cover pot. This distinction keeps the leaf-water area supplied without exposing roots to a standing puddle.

Free-draining soil and restrained nutrition

An airy bromeliad mix with bark pieces suits the small root base. Repot when needed into only a little more room. Keep the leaf base at its previous level. During active growth, feed sparingly according to the label; no solid fertiliser grains belong in the tank. Reassess use and position in winter. The plant stays frost-free indoors. A consistently bright quiet place makes foliage changes easier to understand rather than hiding them beneath several simultaneous care changes.

Offsets add new rosettes to the star

Small flowers in a neoregelia can appear deep in the centre. After flowering, the mother rosette may decline over a long period while new rosettes grow at its base. Let these offsets first grow strong before considering division. While observing, inspect leaf bases for small scale insects or unusually soft spots. A photo from above is especially useful in the plant book: it records markings and the distribution of new rosettes without assuming a fixed flowering date.

Good to know

Are the white stripes a flower?

No. They are part of the leaf markings.

Is the pot 40 cm wide?

No. 30–40 cm describes the crown; the offered pot measures 12 cm.

Can it grow on a bookshelf?

Yes, if the spreading crown stands freely and receives enough daylight.

Should the soil be constantly wet?

No. Slight moisture and free drainage belong together.

Must every leaf have the same stripes?

No. Their natural distribution can differ.
