A bright position that feels right
Phalaenopsis like bright, indirect light. Shield them from hot midday sun and avoid cold draughts. On a windowsill, it is worth watching the actual sunlight throughout the day.
The roots give you a clue
Plump green roots are usually still moist. When visible roots become silvery and the growing medium is almost dry, water may be needed. Check both together. Drying speed depends on light, temperature and the pot; a fixed day of the week does not always suit the plant.
Water and allow to drain completely
Water the nursery pot thoroughly, then allow it to drain well. There must be no standing water in the decorative pot. Keep the leaf crown dry. An airy orchid mix helps the roots; ordinary compact potting compost is unsuitable.
Patience after flowering
Faded flowers alone are not a sign of a care mistake. Continue watching the plant and feed lightly during active growth with a suitable orchid fertiliser, following the manufacturer’s instructions. You can remove completely dry flower stems.
Good to know
Do I have to water every week?
Check the plant regularly, but water according to its actual needs. Silvery roots and an almost dry growing medium are helpful clues.
Why is there water in the decorative pot?
Water can continue draining from the nursery pot after watering. Check the decorative pot and pour away any remaining water.
