Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightKeep bright with filtered daylight.Direct hot midday sun can damage leaves and flowers.
WaterWater or briefly dip when the root ball is nearly dry and the pot lighter.Roots need water and air; constantly wet or prolonged complete dryness is unfavourable.
DrainageRemove the inner pot and let it drain completely. No water reserve should remain in the decorative container.
CompostUse a loose, bark-based orchid mix.Dense ordinary potting compost alters airy root culture.
WarmthKeep warm year-round, avoiding cold draughts and proximity to heating.Abrupt temperature changes particularly stress existing buds.
FeedingFeed sparingly with orchid fertiliser according to the label when new roots and leaves grow.Additional nutrients do not replace suitable root condition.
RepottingRenew broken-down mix during active root growth; provide only appropriate extra room.A large wet surrounding area of compost may stay moist for a long time.
Leaf centreAvoid water in the crown and leaf axils.Standing moisture at the base encourages rot.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

A warm colour with very fine lines

Jamaica reveals itself up close. Its rounded flower segments are not simply uniformly orange: fine reddish-brown veins run across a yellowish to apricot base towards the edge. The pink lip adds a strong centre. Several flowers stand on branched stems, with green buds complementing open blooms. Below, the small rosette of fleshy leaves remains visible. On a light shelf beside a reading chair, this pattern looks particularly attractive. Leave some distance from curtains and the chair back so passers-by do not brush the delicate flowers. This pleasant position must also provide genuine daylight.

Jamaica denotes a named selection

The specific Exotenherz offer gives Phalaenopsis hybrid, cultivar Jamaica, a 9 cm pot and approximately 35–40 cm height in the description. The title rounds this to 35 cm. Kolibri itself lists Jamaica as a separately named selection with the matching warm flower appearance. This documented name is therefore used without turning it into a new botanical species or registered cross. Delivery measurement describes the flowering plant offered; later leaves and new stems have no fixed promised final size.

The reading area needs filtered daylight

A warm interior near a bright window is suitable. At an east-facing window morning sun is often easier to manage than hot afternoon sun; a light curtain helps in a more strongly sunny position. Actually check the location during warm hours rather than relying only on its pleasant morning appearance. Protect orchid leaves from heat buildup. Directly above heating the surroundings dry considerably, while cold ventilation draughts also stress the plant. After delivery remove packaging carefully and let it settle into a suitable position rather than moving it daily for new decoration.

Examine the small pot before watering

Take the inner pot out of its cover and check weight, visible roots and moisture between bark pieces. Firm silvery roots together with nearly dry compost may indicate renewed demand; colour alone does not replace a root-ball check. Supply room-temperature water or briefly dip the root ball without submerging leaves and crown. Then drain completely. The small pot may dry faster on warm bright days than during darker winter conditions. A fixed weekday reflects this change poorly. Prolonged complete dryness is as unfavourable as residual water remaining in the decorative container for days.

Orchid bark lets the roots continue working

Phalaenopsis needs a loose mix with air spaces. Bark-based orchid compost suits this culture; fine ordinary potting compost is not an equivalent substitute. Healthy firm aerial roots outside the pot belong to its structure and are not cut for visual reasons. If the mix breaks down heavily or remains wet for a long time, active root growth is a suitable time to repot, preferably after flowering. Remove dead soft root parts with clean tools and protect living roots. Choose an appropriate new pot. During visible leaf and root growth, sparing fertiliser applications according to orchid fertiliser instructions are useful; more frequent or stronger feeding does not produce certain repeat flowering.

The first flowering is one stage of the plant

Existing flowers began developing at the producer. Some may therefore be older than others after delivery. Natural fading is not automatically answered with additional water. A fully dry stem can be removed with clean tools. A green stem on a vigorous plant can be shortened above a healthy bud and may branch again; no particular result is promised. With weak roots, recovery and new leaves take priority. Jamaica remains a perennial indoor orchid even when its fine warm floral pattern is temporarily absent.

Getting to know the condition beneath the flowers

During regular checks keep the leaf centre and axils dry and accessible. Carefully absorb water that accidentally enters. Also look beneath foliage and at stem bases for new sticky or cottony patches. One ageing lower leaf is assessed differently from several suddenly limp leaves with a wet root ball. In that case first check the roots. Between flowering stages, observe firm new leaves and active root tips. The clean shop original shows an arrangement with other plants and containers; it is a design idea. The associated individual offer and new scenes remain one Jamaica in a small pot.

Good to know

Is Jamaica a separate botanical species ?

No. Here Jamaica is a Phalaenopsis hybrid selection named by the original producer.

What size does the offer give ?

9 cm pot diameter and approximately 35–40 cm height in the description; the title rounds this to 35 cm.

Are the multiple plants in the original included ?

No. The clean original shows a decorated arrangement; the selected offer is one orchid.

Does it need a fixed watering day ?

Check roots, root ball and pot weight before every watering; drain completely afterwards.

May I cut aerial roots ?

Retain healthy firm aerial roots even when they grow outside the pot.

What do I do after flowering ?

Continue care in bright, warm conditions. Remove dry stems; assess green stems together with root strength.
