Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
PositionBright outdoors with the hanging side free.Cascade needs movement room.
StabilitySecure the narrow tall bowl against tipping.Centre of gravity requires reliable support.
MoistureKeep roots evenly slightly moist.Flowers and fruit may increase demand.
WateringSlowly onto soil, then drain. No permanent residual water.
SoilUse a permeable bonsai mixture.Combine moisture and air for roots.
PruningSelectively maintain the cascade line.Check fruit branches first; mind thorns.
FertiliserDuring growth by label. No extra supply solely for desired fruit quantity.
WinterCool and sheltered; protect roots from severe frost and wind. The bowl is more exposed than garden soil.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

The most interesting branch grows beyond the edge

Not every tree crown only reaches upwards. On this firethorn a longer branch extends sideways over the pot edge and then down. Small glossy leaves give that cascade light green movement. Individual yellowish-orange fruits sit nearer the centre in the original. The tall narrow blue bowl supports its form without concealing the hanging line. Pyracantha coccinea remains a living shrub. Cascade is its training, not a separate species with wholly different watering or winter care.

A tall bowl needs a secure position

The offer describes a bonsai about eight to nine years old, a bowl roughly 10 by 10 by 13 centimetres and total height near thirty centimetres. Consider its narrow footprint. A raised weatherproof table lets the branch hang freely; a wobbly stool or busy passage edge is impractical. Carry the tree by its bowl. Neither long branch nor upper crown should support its weight. Thorns may hide among foliage and deserve attention when handling.

Light also reaches the hanging side

A bright sunny to partly shaded outdoor position supports growth and possible fruit development. Acclimatise gently to strong sun after transport. In great summer heat check the narrow dark bowl as well as the crown. Do not continually press the long hanging side against a wall. Some free space helps observation and watering. Weather and actual root moisture still matter outdoors: rain under shelter and wind at an open edge affect the same small bonsai very differently.

Roots keep the cascade supplied

Keep roots evenly slightly moist without continually standing in residual water. Regular moisture checks matter especially during growth and actual flower or fruit development. Water slowly onto soil and let excess drain. Visible moss does not replace checking below it. Assess a limp branch together with moisture and heat; already wet soil does not automatically need a second watering. Account for lower winter consumption without simply stopping supply while the plant still needs water.

Pruning preserves movement rather than hiding it

Permeable bonsai substrate and open holes underpin bowl cultivation. Feed by a suitable label during healthy growth. Shorten extended shoots with the existing cascade line in mind, inspecting flower and fruit starts first. Simple scissors may suit small shaping steps better than forcefully bending older stiff branches. Protect yourself from thorns when wiring and inspect pressure points. Repot by root state at a suitable spring time. Do not combine larger root work and major new shaping without reason.

The attractive winter tree also needs protection

A cool sheltered winter position protects the small bowl from severe frost and icy wind. Properties of firethorn in garden soil do not give unlimited frost assurance for confined roots. Continue checking moisture, especially after dry weeks. Fruits here are for observation, not harvest recommendations. A side photograph in the plant book shows the branch below the bowl edge. Compare the same direction after growth rather than forcing the crown into a supposedly perfect new curve for each photograph.

Good to know

What does cascade mean?

A trained branch extends sideways over the bowl edge and downwards.

Must the tree always carry fruit?

No. The original shows one state, not a year-round fruit promise.

May I use the hanging branch as a handle?

No. Always support the bowl.

May soil dry completely?

Root space should stay evenly slightly moist and be checked regularly.

Does the bonsai need a warm living room in winter?

A cool sheltered winter place is intended, not a permanently warm living room.
