Your care table
| Topic | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Cultivate outdoors bright to partially shaded. | Evergreen needles need winter light too. |
| Heat | Protect from strongly drying afternoon heat. | The shallow bowl loses reserves faster. |
| Water | Supply when soil starts drying after checking the root ball. | Needle colour alone does not measure moisture. |
| Drainage | Remove excess after watering. | No permanently wet roots. |
| Substrate | Use draining bonsai mix. | Combine moisture and air in the root ball. |
| Pruning | Develop healthy branches specifically. | Let weakened trees recover first. |
| Household | Keep poisonous parts and clippings out of reach. | No eating; consider children and animals. |
| Winter | Cool, bright and sheltered; check the bowl root ball. | Wind and frost can stress roots more strongly. |
Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.
Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.
Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.
A conifer need not resemble a spruce
The yew carries short flat needles on fine branches. Several small trunk sections are visible between dark-green areas. Its crown therefore feels quiet and somewhat irregular instead of forming a completely closed green ball. Taxus media is botanically written Taxus × media: the cross marks the connection between European and Japanese yew. No exact named variety is added to this offer. In bonsai, consider mainly existing branching and evergreen character without inferring a particular future garden height.
A small tree with its own safety question
The offer gives approximate age of nine years, a bowl roughly 21 by 15 centimetres and thirty to thirty-five centimetres total height. These measurements describe the shaped assortment tree. Yews contain poisonous parts, particularly needles and seeds; they are not edible decoration. Choose a place inaccessible to children and animals. Cut branches must not be left openly lying around either. When unpacking, support the bowl, not densely needled branches. A good first footing thus combines with practical, responsible care organisation.
Think about light and shelter together through the year
A bright to partially shaded outdoor position suits well. Hot dry afternoon sun and strongly drying wind can burden the small bowl further. The evergreen crown needs winter light too; a dark store room is therefore not an equivalent sheltered position. Build stronger outdoor conditions gently after transport. Look at inner branches too: very deep shade can loosen the crown. Permanently standing in a warm living room does not match this conifer’s annual rhythm, even if its little bowl looks decorative there.
A fine conifer still has real water needs
When topsoil starts drying, check the whole root ball and water thoroughly if needed. Excess must drain; the bowl does not stand permanently in water. Dark needles are not a reliable moisture meter. Looking at soil is therefore worthwhile especially after dry windy days. Winter consumption may be lower, but an evergreen tree still loses water. A prolonged frost-free dry period calls for attention. Do not supply an already wet root ball additionally simply because individual needles change colour.
Develop branching in small steps
Draining bonsai substrate and open drainage holes ease balanced root care. Feed a healthily growing tree according to suitable product instructions. Small shaping steps begin by considering desired branch lines, not an arbitrary round cut over the whole crown. Yews can shoot from older wood, but a weakened tree first gets time to recover. Do not forcefully bend old stiff branches. Actual root condition matters when repotting. The shallow bowl should fit existing tree form without burdening roots with unnecessarily large wet soil space.
Winter green needs a protected root ball
In winter, position the bowl cool and sheltered, protected from strong frost, icy wind and stressful winter sun. A garden profile with high hardiness is not unlimited clearance for unprotected bonsai roots. Soil and drainage stay checkable. A photograph without changing decoration can show clearly in the plant book which branches actually thicken. Note emergence, pruning dates and winter position. Pleasure in this yew comes from quiet development of its branch structure, not quick pruning that immediately eliminates every small uneven section.
