Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightChoose a sunny position with shelter if possible.Pointed flowers and stems about 50 cm tall need clear space.
SoilPrepare fertile permeable soil without a wet hollow. The dormant bulb should not later stay constantly wet.
Planting timePlant in autumn in unfrozen ground; store cool and airy until then.Healthy dormant material does not need closed damp packaging.
DepthConsider about two to three actual bulb heights and packet instructions.Size 11/12 is circumference, not measured bulb width.
SpacingAt least two bulb widths; about 10–15 cm in beds as guidance.Leaves and later bulb development need room.
WaterCheck during dry spring periods and water as needed.A container loses its limited water reserve faster.
NutrientsProvide moderate feeding during growth according to need and label. The bulb builds up before natural dieback.
After floweringRemove faded heads and leave green foliage.Early leaf cutting affects the next flower development.
SummerWhen lifting, wait for yellow leaves; store healthy material dry and airy.Summer dormancy without constant wetness may support repeat flowering.
1. Check moisture

For young plants, feel the soil directly at the root ball. The surface and deeper soil may have different moisture levels.

2. Water where needed

Water thoroughly after planting; later, water according to the soil, weather and establishment rather than a fixed calendar.

3. Check drainage

Avoid standing water. For plants in containers, also check that water runs out of the drainage hole.

The tips change the outline

Vendee Globe’s flower has six long pointed petals whose ends curve outwards. A slender cup remains at first, later opening further to show its centre. Yellow areas shade into orange to orange-red; individual flowers in the same stage illustration may show different amounts of colour. This movement is part of a lily-flowered tulip’s character. Smooth, slightly grey-green elongated leaves accompany green stems. A dark wooden wall or quiet bed edge makes the outline clearer than a dense jumble of other strong flower colours.

A dozen bulbs is the beginning

The offer contains twelve bulbs of the selection written Vendeeglobe in the shop. The horticultural name also appears as Vendee Globe. Pictures show later spring flowering. Neither planted beds nor flowering potted plants are part of the delivery state. The bulb supplier gives about 50 cm flower height and April to May flowering. For example, split twelve bulbs into two small groups whose yellow and orange heads relate to one another. Put them somewhere you actually see in spring, such as beside a sunny terrace edge.

A sunny place with summer to follow

Vendee Globe suits a sunny bed with fertile, permeable soil. Shelter helps tall flower stems when spring wind crosses the garden. Avoid long-wet hollows and places needing constant watering even in summer. A free outlet is essential in containers; a closed decorative outer pot must not become a reservoir around bulbs. Also plan where leaves can continue growing after flowering. A group directly in front of your favourite seat needs this green continuation just as much as a planting among perennials, even when flowers are already gone.

Read the real bulb body in autumn

Plant in autumn in unfrozen ground. Until then keep bulbs cool, dry and airy rather than in a closed damp bag. Brown papery covering may be absent in patches; firmness and absence of rotting areas matter more. Size 11/12 denotes bulb circumference, not an eleven- or twelve-centimetre diameter. Approximately two to three actual bulb heights guide depth alongside packet instructions. Tips face up. At least two bulb widths apart, and roughly 10–15 cm in beds, provide useful guidance. Wear gloves if skin is sensitive, as tulip bulbs can irritate it.

The leaf phase determines watering

Water after planting if soil is dry. Rain often suffices in beds if it supplies the root area. During dry spring weeks, check soil and water according to need; containers need more frequent checks. Drought stress during shoots and flowering can limit development and shorten the display. Wet soil instead calls first for checking drainage. Moderate feeding, potassium-rich if needed, during growth supports bulbs for the next season. Follow the fertiliser label and stop when foliage dies back. More fertiliser replaces neither light nor suitable soil.

Remove flowers, retain leaves

After flowering, remove faded heads if seed formation is unwanted. Green leaves remain until they naturally turn yellow and later dry. Do not cut away the entire leaf tuft just because the bed looks tidier. Neighbouring perennials may visually accompany this phase but should not immediately shade leaves completely. Yellow and orange flames are expected Vendee Globe flower features. Assess new brown spots, clear deformities or damaged leaves separately instead of attributing every change solely to the cultivar’s colour play.

A dry summer plan helps repeat flowering

The tulip is perennial, but garden tulips do not deliver the same abundance everywhere year after year. Repeat flowering may weaken especially in summer-wet soil. If lifting bulbs, wait until foliage yellows. Dry and gently clean healthy material, then store airy, dry and dark until autumn planting. Discard soft or noticeably mouldy bulbs. In well-permeable soil you may also watch the group in place and record development in the plant book. A sensible winter position protects a small container from prolonged wetness and hard freezing. Tulips are ornamental plants and are not used for eating.

Good to know

What does lily-flowered tulip mean?

The six petals have long points curving outwards at their tips. Vendee Globe is neither double nor fringed.

Why are not all flowers equally orange?

Yellow to orange and orange-red belong to the cultivar’s appearance. Opening, age and light change visible proportions.

How big is the delivered plant?

Twelve bulbs are delivered. About 50 cm refers to later flower height, not a young delivery plant.

Is 11/12 a diameter?

No. Trade size describes bulb circumference and must not be used as measured width in a depth calculation.

Must I dig bulbs up every summer?

This is not a rigid requirement. Development can be watched in well-permeable ground; lifting and dry summer storage may be useful in summer-wet soil.

Does the group flower equally strongly each year?

This cannot be assured for a garden tulip. Light, leaf maturity, nutrients and summer conditions affect the next flowers.
