Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightBright and filtered, protected from sudden harsh sunshine.Tropical foliage responds to abrupt light changes.
WaterKeep evenly moist; do not let the root ball dry completely.Several young shoots need a steady supply.
CompostMoisture-retentive, loose and freely draining.Wet oxygen-poor compost hinders roots.
WarmthWarm all year and protected from cold draughts. The plant does not tolerate a frosty winter rest.
AirAvoid dry positions close to heaters and provide suitable air exchange.Very dry surroundings can affect leaf tips.
FeedDuring active growth, follow the product instructions.Supply more cautiously with little light and little new growth.
HarvestUse leaves only sparingly and after confident identification.A young plant needs enough leaf area to keep growing.
ExpectationsView indoor cultivation mainly as scented ornamental foliage.Seed capsules are not a reliable harvest in a home.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

Aromatic foliage from the ginger family

The shop offers this plant as Elettaria cardamomum with the trade description cinnamon aroma. Cardamom belongs to the ginger family and produces several upright leafy shoots from an underground rhizome. Its elongated green leaves can have an aromatic scent. The cinnamon-aroma description refers to perception of the offered foliage, not a true cinnamon tree of the genus Cinnamomum. The familiar cardamom spice comes mainly from seeds. A young indoor plant is initially appreciated here for its leaf structure and scent.

A manageable delivery size with further growth potential

The offer states a 12 cm pot and approximately 25 to 30 cm overall height. The original photograph shows several young green shoots with no fruit or seed capsules. Such a plant can later take up more space under suitable conditions. The small delivery pot is therefore the start of cultivation rather than a permanent final size. A bright living area should provide a position that is easy to check and allows growth. The scene shows such a place without suggesting an already fruiting spice plant.

Tropical consistency rather than changing extremes

Cardamom thrives with warmth and a fairly humid environment. Bright filtered daylight suits it better than sudden strong sun behind hot glass. A bright room with favourable humidity can be suitable, provided enough actual daylight is available. Keep away from cold draughts and drying heat from radiators. A summer spell outdoors is possible in a sheltered warm place, but requires gradual adjustment and bringing indoors before cool nights. A dark cool cellar is not a suitable winter position for this tropical foliage plant.

Keep compost evenly moist and airy

Water thoroughly as needed without letting the root ball dry completely. The compost should hold moisture while remaining freely draining. Remove excess water from the outer pot. An appropriately deep, suitable container provides room for the spreading root and rhizome area. Do not tug unnecessarily at young shoots when repotting. Feed during active growth according to the product instructions. With less light in winter, consumption falls; then check moisture more carefully and reduce supplies rather than continuing unchanged on a summer watering calendar.

Distinguish leaf scent from spice harvesting realistically

The shop describes the leaves as an aromatic ingredient. For occasional culinary use, use only healthy confidently identified leaves, wash them first and use sparingly. The offered plant is no quick replacement for purchased cardamom capsules: flowering and seed formation cannot be reliably expected under ordinary indoor conditions. Take very little foliage from a young plant so that enough area remains for further growth. Rubbing a leaf can reveal the scent, but frequently damaging many leaves weakens the green structure. No medicinal effects are inferred from this.

New shoots provide a useful measure of care

Watch whether strong fresh shoots emerge from the base and new leaves unfold well. Brown tips can relate to dry air or uneven supplies, while yellow leaves may also reflect wet roots or insufficient light. Check conditions together and remove only dead material. Regularly inspect leaf undersides for pests. Larger well-developed clumps can be propagated through careful rhizome division, provided each section has healthy roots and shoots. In warm bright winter quarters, the plant remains a living green companion.

Good to know

Does cinnamon aroma mean a true cinnamon tree?

No. The offer names Elettaria cardamomum in the ginger family. Cinnamon aroma is a trade description of scent.

Can I soon harvest my own cardamom capsules?

Do not plan on this in ordinary indoor cultivation. The young plant is presented here mainly for its foliage.

Can it stand outside in summer?

In a warm sheltered position after gradual adjustment. Bring it back into suitable indoor quarters before cool nights.

How tall is the offered plant?

The shop states approximately 25 to 30 cm overall height in a 12 cm pot. Later growth can exceed that.
