Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
ArrivalCheck firm corms; cool dry airy before planting.Papery coverings normal; soft/mouldy material needs attention.
PositionPlan spring light at ground level and draining soil.Low cups disappear behind tall edges and dense shade.
PlantingAutumn by package, tip up, gently close soil.Actual corm and use decide depth, not trade measure.
SpacingAbout 9 cm bed guidance, distribute loose groups.Room for shoots and later daughters.
WaterCheck soil during leaf growth; water dry pots and drain.Spring rain often enough in beds, small pots differ.
NutrientsGarden usually no extra feed; pots by need/label in leaf growth.High doses/calendar cannot replace soil/light.
After flowersKeep foliage until natural yellowing, only then mow.Leaf phase supplies next corm generation.
Summer restHealthy lifted material after leaf maturity cool/dry in paper.Wet closed storage and injuries encourage losses.
1. Check moisture

For young plants, feel the soil directly at the root ball. The surface and deeper soil may have different moisture levels.

2. Water where needed

Water thoroughly after planting; later, water according to the soil, weather and establishment rather than a fixed calendar.

3. Check drainage

Avoid standing water. For plants in containers, also check that water runs out of the drainage hole.

Cups noticeable at ground level

Purple and white lie close with golden-yellow cup between. Some pale flowers carry fine purple stripes. Narrow green leaves with pale midline cross dark soil. Large-flowered mix looks strong close up but stays low spring ornament. Smooth flower parts form simple rounded cups, not doubles. Large-flowered describes horticultural garden mix in Crocus genus; package names no individual species/cultivars. Plan shared shape and mixed colours; count/distribution reveal themselves in planting. Low edge or view from path shows better than behind tall perennials.

Thirty corms begin underground

Thirty corms supplied for planting. Crocuses have firm underground storage organs; usual trade flower-bulb term groups these plants together. Flowering originals show later stage, not ready-planted bowl. Open on arrival and check firmness. Dry papery covering normal; soft, strongly mouldy or damaged spots merit attention. Unplanted stock stays cool dry airy. Distribute into loose small groups before planting to keep paths free and avoid existing roots. Shop 7–8size retained as trade description; implies neither future height nor measured corm width.

Spring light and mowing plan belong together

Mix normally blooms February/March. Weather, soil warmth and site shift timing; not every cup opens together. About 12–15 cm useful later flowering-height guidance, making front edge or visible lawn island suitable. Late winter check sunlight reaches soil. Beneath deciduous woody plants before leaves light may fit; dense evergreen hedge already shades. Lawn needs later decision: leaves must grow on after flowers. If entire lawn must promptly be cut, choose separate bed group.

Autumn planting and water route

Plant autumn while soil unfrozen workable. September–November or later in suitable weather describes working window, not fixed date everywhere. Choose loose draining earth. Wet hollow not reliably fixed by small dry hole. Tip up, heed supplied package. About 12 cm depth specialist guidance for large garden crocus in lawn; containers often7–12 cm. Soil, real corm size and planting purpose qualify this. Around 9 cm bed spacing gives leaves and growth room. Gently close soil, lightly water if dry.

Terrace bowl needs care until dieback

Container makes low cups accessible on sunny terrace. Enough soil below corms and clear holes needed. Thirty need not fit one little pot. Divide so corms not tightly touching and moisture retained appropriately. During sprouting/green leaves finger-check below surface. Target water dry soil; already wet roots gain nothing from more. Empty standing rain in saucers. Garden rain often enough; prolonged dry growing phase still merits look. Dormant summer corms require no constant watering rhythm.

Last flower does not end season

Leave fine leaves undisturbed in light after blooms. They supply next generation and should yellow naturally. Early cutting or immediate mowing shortens important phase. Spent crocus flowers need no routine removal. Normal garden earth usually no supplementary feed; prolonged containers by mix/need/label during leaf growth. More feed does not automatically extend flowering. Mark site after dieback. Plant-book note of last green leaf and suitable first mowing helps next spring plan.

Keep watching dormant corms

After above-ground disappearance place remains planted. Under suitable conditions mix grows and multiplies over years, without identical flower amount or colour distribution promised. Weak flowering first check shade, early mowing, competition and waterlogging. Healthy crowded groups can be lifted/distributed late summer. Spring-bowl corms carefully removed after leaf maturity, cool/dry in paper until autumn. Small daughters need time to flower. Rodents/birds can disturb sites: check visible damage before more water for missing shoots. Permanently wet storage or injured stock complicates further culture.

Good to know

What arrives?

30 planting corms. Images later flowering; bowls, garden design/decor not supplied.

Is mix particular species?

Large-flowered garden Crocus trade mix, no complete species/cultivar list.

Equal count of all colours?

Not promised. Originals purple, white, yellow and white-purple stripes.

What depth/spacing?

Heed package. Large garden crocus lawn about 12 cm guidance; pots often7–12 cm; beds about 9 cm apart.

Can flowering bowl be kept growing?

Yes. Care during green foliage. After yellowing keep healthy corms cool dry until autumn.

When mow lawn above?

Only when leaves naturally yellow/die back. Last flower alone insufficient.

What check with few flowers?

Spring light, intact leaf phase, soil moisture and corm damage. More water/feed cannot fix deep shade or early cutting.
