Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightBright to partial shade, sheltered from hot sun.Leaves do not tolerate abrupt strong sunshine.
WaterKeep the root ball moderately moist with the surface drying slightly.Repeated complete drying burdens fine roots.
DrainageAllow water to drain after watering.Constant wetness may cause root damage.
CompostUse humus-rich loose mix.Moisture and air should balance within the root ball.
FertiliserGive sparingly during active growth.A hanging pot needs nutrition but no salt reserve.
PlantletsLet daughter rosettes root before separating. The connection to the mother supports the start.
WinterKeep potted plants frost-free with sufficient light. Not every saxifrage is a winter-hardy garden plant.
SpaceLet runners hang freely and protect from snagging.Thin red connections are delicate.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

Runners belong to the plant’s personality

Rounded to kidney-shaped leaves carry pale vein markings on green, often with reddish undersides. Fine hairs give a soft surface. Saxifraga stolonifera belongs to the saxifrage family and comes from East Asia. Thin reddish runners grow from the rosette, forming small daughter rosettes. In a hanging pot, it is easy to observe how the plant would explore new sites through these connections. Despite some English trade names, it is neither a begonia nor a strawberry.

Delivery height does not tell all about hanging length

The shop states a 14 cm hanging pot and approximately 15 to 20 cm total height. Delicate runners may reach significantly farther down. The scene shows this distinction without deriving another fixed delivery length. Small daughter plants need room and should not regularly rub a wall or passageway. Before moving, check whether a runner has snagged on an object. Hanging arrangement and decorative cover pot depend on the actual shop offer.

Filtered light and sheltered surroundings

A bright to partly shaded position without hot direct sun suits well. Pale veins are also displayed in filtered light. A lightless room remains unsuitable. A sheltered shaded outdoor place is possible in summer if gently acclimatised. Overwinter the indoor hanging plant frost-free; the saxifrage name does not justify blanket hardiness like alpine garden species. Avoid dry hot air immediately above a heater.

Water the root ball evenly without waterlogging

Keep compost moderately moist. The surface may dry slightly before watering again; the small root ball should not repeatedly dry completely. Drain excess after watering. With many leaves and daughter rosettes, a developed hanging plant may use more water in warmth than expected. In cooler winter conditions, check less often and water according to need. Hanging leaves alone are no reliable watering signal if compost is already wet.

Root daughter rosettes before separating

Lay a suitable daughter rosette on loose moist compost in a small second pot and gently secure without crushing. The mother connection may initially remain. Once the young rosette has its own roots and sits firmly, cut the runner with clean scissors. Already well-rooted daughter plants may be potted directly. Several young rosettes may share for a denser start if enough room remains. Not every tiny newly formed rosette must immediately be separated.

Flowers and small care steps through the year

In good conditions, delicate white flowers appear on taller loose stems. Flowering is seasonal and not guaranteed at delivery. Carefully remove old dry leaves and feed moderately during growth according to the label. Repot as needed into loose humus-rich compost. Inspect undersides for spider mites and aphids; outdoors also watch for slugs and feeding damage. Long healthy runners need not disappear for tidiness: they create this hanging plant’s particular appeal.

Good to know

Are small plants on the threads weeds?

No. They are daughter rosettes through which the saxifrage spreads vegetatively.

May I directly cut off the plantlets?

Well-rooted daughter plants may be separated. First let unrooted ones establish on compost and temporarily keep the connection.

Can the hanging pot remain outside in winter?

The pot culture described here should overwinter frost-free. The name saxifrage alone is no hardiness promise.

Why do parts hang much farther than 20 cm?

The shop size of approximately 15 to 20 cm does not clearly describe the length of all runners. They may reach much farther down.
