TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
ArrivalCheck root moisture/wrap/stability.Large visible trunk is not established garden rooting.
SiteSun to light partial shade, sheltered cold wind.Stiffer fans handle wind better, not every injury prevented.
SpaceKeep future crown/transport route clear.130 cm delivery total, not final height.
SoilFertile lasting structure/free pot outlets.Root moisture/air must work together.
PlantingSpring suitable climate, original trunk-base level.Rooting time/drainage help before winter.
WaterCheck ball, thorough water if dry, remove leftovers.Wind/heat/rooting change demand.
FeedIn growth according to need/label.Extra feed fixes neither wetness nor physical damage.
PruneRemove only entirely dead outer fans.Living centre is sole further growing point.
WinterIf outdoor frost plan uncertain, bright cool frost-free pot quarters.Pot roots more cold-exposed than protected ground.
1. Check moisture

For young plants, feel the soil directly at the root ball. The surface and deeper soil may have different moisture levels.

2. Water where needed

Water thoroughly after planting; later, water according to the soil, weather and establishment rather than a fixed calendar.

3. Check drainage

Avoid standing water. For plants in containers, also check that water runs out of the drainage hole.

Small fans with clear outlines

Close up, many narrow lengthwise-folded segments open into firm green fans. Below, trunk has brown fibre wrapping. Horticultural selection known as Trachycarpus wagnerianus or Trachycarpus fortunei Wagnerianus. Smaller/stiffer leaves define it: windmill palm, not coconut palm. Compact mainly describes leaf effect, not permanently tiny table plant. Years lift crown on trunk while some old lower leaves die.

130 cm starts at bottom of pot

One palm in28 cm nursery pot, approx. 130 cm total including pot and plant. Neither bare trunk height nor future garden size. Clean original shows raised trunk/several green fans/brown pot. Unwrap supports first without pulling stalks, check moist ball/stability. Immediate visual accent still needs rooting time. Current delivery availability at linked offer; care portrait useful during delivery pauses.

Firm leaves still need wind shelter

Sunny to light partial shade outdoors. Stiff fans less ruffled than many ordinary windmill palms, but cold drying gusts still stress. Protected terrace or open bright sheltered corner better than exposed balcony. Plan crown width and trunk access now; roughly2–3 m between free-standing crowns as guidance. Paths/doors must remain clear of stalks. Pot also needs route to winter quarters.

Plan roots before planting out

Adequate stable vessel/free drainage eases growing. Fertile structurally lasting soil holds moisture/releases excess. Delivered pot not permanent standard: repot densely rooted ball. Trunk base stays same level, do not bury fibre. Local winter climate/drainage decide planting. Spring leaves time before cold. Handful of gravel in hole will not dry surrounding periodically waterlogged ground: whole site must suit.

Summer water thoroughly and watch drainage

Check ball not just pale surface rim. If inner soil dry, water slowly reaching all roots; surplus drains and leaves saucer. Sunny terrace/wind/dense roots change demand, fixed weekly rhythm too crude. Newly planted original ball initially still needs your water even if adjoining ground seems moist. Suitable labelled feed during active growth. Yellow leaf not automatic extra portion: check moisture/outflow/move or one ageing outer fan first.

Living centre cannot be shortened

Growth forms at crown’s upper centre. Cut-off top will not restart like pruned shrub. Leave living inner leaves/new spear alone. Entirely dead outer fans removed with clean tool without cutting trunk. Fibre need not strip for neatness. Older plants can produce small pale yellow curved flower clusters in summer. Young/pot plants need not flower regularly: later development, not yardstick of good current care.

Have workable plan before frost

Green foliage remains over winter, not furniture to store months in darkness. Cold/uncertain regions: bright cool frost-free quarters practical. Outdoors, roots/wind protection, drainage and accessible crown checks belong together. Planted-out rooting, frost duration/winter wetness matter too. Blanket minimum temperature says little about soaked small ball. Frost-free days check soil/water only needed. After injury observe growth before worried cutting into living centre.

Good to know

Different palm from Trachycarpus fortunei?

Wagnerianus horticulturally names familiar small-leaved/stiffer-fanned windmill-palm selection, hence both names. Shared species membership does not erase leaf character.

Stays130 cm?

No, described delivery total including28 cm pot; long-term planted-out can grow metres.

Windy balcony?

Fans less wind-damage-prone than many windmill palms; stability/protection cold drying gusts still sensible.

How often water?

Check actual ball, if dry water thoroughly/drain. Season/sun/wind change demand.

Keep small by topping?

No, never injure living centre. Only entirely dead outer leaves.

Check pot in winter even little rain?

Roof can leave ball dry, wet saucer too wet. Check frost-free days/drain. Frozen roots may temporarily not absorb even moist soil.

Must flower on delivery?

No, older-stage flowers can be rare; green crown is focus.
