Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
PositionBright to partial shade, protected from strong drying.A rock garden need not be dry and scorching hot.
PlantingSet in unfrozen soil with suitable moisture. The young perennial should establish roots.
SoilHumus-rich, moist and very permeable.Moisture must not stand permanently.
WaterCheck roots or border moisture beneath the crown.Dense surface can conceal dry soil.
Plant depthDo not bury the cushion base deeply.Healthy growth stays free.
Flower careGently remove spent stems.Preserve green cushion.
NutrientsSupply moderately by soil and label. No concentrated flowering treatment needed.
WinterAvoid winter wetness, watch containers particularly.Potted roots differ from border roots.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

Green makes a quiet base

Many small finely lobed mossy-saxifrage leaves form a low cushion. Small white flowers stand above it on delicate stems. A pale stone edge with some protection from drying heat shows both levels well. The moss-like appearance does not mean it is moss. Saxifraga × arendsii denotes a horticultural hybrid group. The offer is white-flowered without another named cultivar. A general group profile therefore supplies no exact final height of an invented variety.

Three cushions start at the border

The set includes three plants in 12 cm pots, about 12 to 15 cm total height. The shop figure here includes the pot. Loose spacing about 25 to 30 centimetres can guide lateral development; observe actual cushion width. Remove the small plant at its container, not by pulling fine flower stems. Check rain drainage before setting it. A lovely stone hollow must not become a permanently wet collection basin.

Moist soil instead of a hot dry crevice

The group suits humus-rich moist very well-drained soil in a bright to partially shaded position. Some protection from hot afternoon sun can ease moisture care. A drying crack in a scorching wall differs from a friendly rock-garden edge. Plant in spring or autumn when soil is unfrozen and roots can establish. Gently settle and water soil after planting. Do not bury the existing cushion base deeply under extra soil.

The dense surface sometimes hides roots

Do not roughly pull leaves apart; check moisture at the edge and below surface. The cushion should not dry completely for a long period. Still, excess must drain, especially in pots. Rain may wet flowers without supplying a sheltered pot sufficiently. In a border surrounding soil moisture also matters. These different situations determine the next watering. Assess limp foliage or brown areas together with roots, light and wetness, rather than reading them only as thirst.

Remove flower stems while preserving the cushion

After flowering gently remove spent stems. Do not cut back all healthy green cushion. Nutrients remain moderate by soil or label; a small perennial needs no concentrated flower treatment. Remove fallen dead parts gently if they hide the centre. Check drainage when development is unusual. White flowers belong chiefly to late spring and early summer. Constant renewed autumn flowering is not promised for this unnamed selection.

Observe perennial development in one place

Mossy saxifrage can accompany the garden for years. But winter conditions in a small pot differ from an established cushion in a permeable border. Avoid lasting winter wetness and check containers on frost-free days too. A heated living room is not planned as this perennial’s standard quarters. A flower close-up and later overall plant-book view show widening. Note shade periods and soil moisture. They explain development better than expecting low green to close an area everywhere without care.

Good to know

Is mossy saxifrage real moss?

No. Its fine cushion is made of small Saxifraga leaves.

When do white flowers appear?

The group profile describes late spring to early summer.

Does total height include the pot?

Yes. The offer lists about 12–15 cm total height.

Does a scorching dry wall crack suit?

A moist permeable place with appropriate light is better than constant drying.

Should the whole cushion be cut after flowering?

Spent stems may be removed; healthy green stays.
