Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightVery bright/sunny, stronger sun gradually.Compact crown needs day without abrupt shift from dark culture.
WaterAfter drying evenly water ball/drain fully.Water-storing leaves still risk wet roots.
SpaceAway handles/paths/delicate neighbour leaves.Small habit does not soften sharp teeth/tips.
MixGritty succulent earth/free drainage.Lower leaves can hide wet soil.
SurfaceNo polishing/leaf shine.Bloom/imprints natural appearance.
FeedSparse labelled supply in activity.Small firm rosette needs no high reserve.
RepotSpring needed/modest enlargement, handle ball/pot.Extra earth dries slower, leaves not handles.
WinterVery bright/frost-free, near-dry at rest.Cool wet earth consumed slowly at rest.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

Small rosette of thick blue bowls

Close viewing shows broad thick matte blue-grey leaves cupped inward, from above like nested bowls. Wavy edges many reddish-brown teeth, slim darker terminal spine. Inner tight, older lower leaves spreading. Neighbour edge imprints formed in crowded bud, character not polished away or automatic illness. Bright site viewing without grabbing between tips best; no extra decoration/artificial gloss needed.

Documented named selection

Original propagator Rancho Tissue describes thick blue-grey/red tips/strong bud imprints, lists Agave pygmae, other horticulture pygmaea. Kew now treats species name Agave pygmaea as synonym of Agave seemanniana. Practical clear Dragon Toes here, historical writing not new wild species. Not yellow-edged/centre-variegated agave, uniform matte blue-grey. Own original matches dense thick form. Propagator description not assurance each shop plant directly from particular lab.

Compact delivery needs clear space

Offer 17 cm pot/30 cm total fits one compact original rosette. Later rosette around 30 cm high/wide propagator guidance, not immutable limit/delivery measure. Leaves may overhang rim. Plan free tips/winter transport, not child eye level/everyday reaching area. Carry vessel not stiff leaves/terminal spines as handles/hanger. Scene small offer not mature outdoor clump or imminent flower.

Introduce sun to wax-coated rosette gradually

Very bright to sunny growing site, attractive home corner only with actual day. Post-shipping/winter stronger direct sun gradually. Outdoors protected bright first/increase exposure gently. Distinguish new dry pale skin injury from normal blue-grey bloom. Rain-sheltered balcony/terrace frost-free season, outlets/away paths. Foreign outdoor/frost-zone guidance not blanket hardiness for wet German pot. Bright frost-free room planned from start.

Root ball under lower leaves decides

Dense rosette hides earth, outer dry rim not centre moisture proof. Check roots/weight before water. Active growth after drying supply evenly throughout/drain fully. Saucer/cover never hidden reservoir. Outdoors also after rain. Heat/sun/vessel/mix change drying, no rigid week. Very long drought can wrinkle despite storage. Soft dark areas/moist soil check base/roots/drainage not immediate extra water.

Mix, repot and leaf care together

Loose gritty mix easier to manage than heavy long-wet soil, clear hole essential. Spring filled roots/unusable compact mix repot. Appropriate modest step, leaf base same level. Support ball/use spine protection, do not press crown. Healthy leaves no shaping, matte bloom/imprints retained. Sparse labelled succulent feed in visible activity. Healthy rooted daughter rosettes may later separate if present, no tearing unrooted young beginnings pre-emptively.

Carry compact form through winter

Before cold wet autumn move very bright frost-free. Slow growth much less water/no feed to force soft leaves. Dark cellar cannot replace light though frost-free. Check unusually lasting moisture/shrinkage/new soft places. Scale/mealybugs hidden leaf angles, early observation aids decisions. Spring more light/visible growth supply rises by need, outside needs reacclimatisation. Possible future agave flower belongs later stage not current leaf/delivery height. Compact blue crown is focus.

Good to know

Just small yellow-edged agave?

No, named compact uniform blue-grey/red spines/pronounced bud imprints.

Jagged lines on leaves?

Neighbour leaves imprint tightly packed bud, firm characteristic patterns not polished.

Offer measurements?

17 cm pot diameter/30 cm total, possible later rosette separate.

Agave pygmaea elsewhere?

Horticulture uses for Dragon Toes; Kew species synonym Agave seemanniana. Here named selection.

Outside whole year?

Very bright frost-free winter planned. Sheltered summer after sun acclimatisation.

When water?

After actual ball dries, in growth thorough/free drainage; much less winter rest.
