Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
PositionChoose bright window with filtered light.Patterned foliage needs light; strong heat behind glass may harm it.
WaterLet surface dry somewhat then supply each rootball individually.Equal pots dry differently with leaf mass and position.
DrainageLet drain and empty decorative pots after watering.Fleshy roots and rhizomes may rot in constantly wet soil.
Air humidityGroup loosely, do not routinely spray leaves.Moister air helps while wet surfaces and poor ventilation encourage problems.
SoilLoose well-draining houseplant mix.Moisture and air must coexist in root zone.
FeedSparingly by label during active growth.Slowed winter growth needs much less.
RepottingCheck rhizome edge in spring, use slightly wider pot if needed.Surface rhizomes benefit from room, not excess wet soil.
PropagationHealthy leaves or rhizome sections with clean tools.Rex hybrids can renew vegetatively with warmth, light and suitable soil.
WinterBright warm place, water adjusted to leaves and growth.Possible leaf loss lowers demand; cold and wet soil combine poorly.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

A small arrangement of silver and pink

Rex begonias merit second look. Silver-green surface is crossed by dark veins beside pink and deep magenta zones. Leaves are not mirror-symmetrical. Slanting bases, pointed tips and finely toothed edges create lively shape. Originals bring three different patterns together. Place pots with bright background visible between leaves so each pattern reads separately. Table by window forms colourful small collection even without flowers. Leave free space beside it: young leaves need unfold without constantly striking shelf edge.

Rex describes a diverse hybrid group

Royal or Rex begonia belongs to begonia family. Term covers many horticultural hybrids with Begonia rex in ancestry. Silver, green, red and patterned forms exist; not every trade plant has own cultivar name. Botanica here names linked offer of three foliage begonias, not a particular named cultivar. Group typically has fleshy rhizomes along or near soil surface producing stalks and new leaves. Small pink or white flowers can appear, but changing foliage provides main effect. Eventual size depends on hybrid and growing conditions.

Three young plants retain own pots

Exact offer contains three plants, each in 12 cm pot about 20–25 cm tall including pot. Photographed patterns illustrate composition; fixed allocation of named cultivars not stated. After unpacking check each ball separately. Equal-sized adjacent pots may dry differently. Initially keep plants in existing pots. Decorative pots need enough room for easy removal to check weight and moisture. Shared decorative bowl possible if each inner pot drains freely and never stands in pooled water. Young delivery plants later outgrow first table arrangement.

Bright light without overheated leaves

Bright filtered daylight is good choice. Early sun at east window generally easier to manage than hot noon through south glass. Pale curtain can soften direct rays. Dark room corner remains unsuitable despite strong colours. Occasionally turn pots gently if leaves clearly lean to window. Warm living-room temperatures suit; roughly 18–24 °C useful guidance. Avoid cold draught when airing. Winter needs distance from cold pane and hot radiator. Light, warmth and root moisture belong together: cool still-wet pot needs no more water simply because room air seems dry.

Moist roots, dry leaves

Feel surface and lift individual pot before watering. When upper layer lightly dried, pour slowly onto soil. Supply roots evenly then let excess drain. Neither long complete dryness nor permanently wet earth suits. Pour between leaf stalks rather than over hairy surfaces and rhizome base. Loose group helps higher air humidity. With water/pebble tray, pots stand above water. Spraying is no replacement. Air between neighbouring leaves prevents damp sealed areas. Extra wetness cannot repair damaged leaf.

Shallow roots and targeted renewal

Loose draining houseplant soil suits repotting. Rather broad, not needlessly deep pot fits superficial rhizome. Check in spring; rhizome at rim may justify moving or dividing. Very large reserve pot retains much unused wet soil. Add restrained nutrients by label during visible growth, accounting for pre-fed compost. Healthy older leaves can be used for propagation: Rex can grow from leaf pieces or incised veins. Clean tools, fine draining propagation soil, warmth and sheltered bright place required. Successful division of healthy rhizome offers another method.

Watch winter and new leaves

Low-light weeks may stall growth. Some Rex hybrids lose part of foliage then. Check rhizome condition and soil rather than immediately giving up or strong feed. Reduced leaf mass lowers water requirement; supply roots correspondingly cautiously. Remove dead leaves carefully and keep place clean. Mealybugs often easier to see on stalks and undersides than dense foliage. Soft rhizomes, persistently wet soil or enlarging spots need detailed checks. Change evident cause first and observe fresh growth. Healthy new leaf shows more clearly than old damaged one whether light and water fit again.

Good to know

Are Botanica and Rex a specific cultivar name?

Rex means horticultural hybrid group here. Botanica names trio; individual cultivars not promised.

Will I get exactly photographed three patterns?

Offer gives three different foliage begonias. Originals illustrate possible patterns without fixed cultivar composition.

Can all three share bowl?

Separate inner pots practical initially. Shared decorative bowl needs free drainage and pots above collected water.

Should I spray leaves?

Routine wetting unnecessary. Support air humidity with ventilation and water soil directly.

Why winter leaf loss?

Lower light and rest may affect foliage retention. Also check rhizome, moisture and temperature; soft areas or constant wetness need investigation.

Does it need particularly deep pot?

Rhizomes near surface. Suitable broad draining container usually better than oversized deep pot.

Can leaf grow new plant?

Yes, Rex can propagate from leaf sections or incised veins. Healthy material, clean tools and warm bright sheltered propagation place.
