Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
PositionSheltered and bright to partly shaded; sun is possible with a good water supply.Hot walls and dry wind increase stress.
WaterKeep evenly moist and water thoroughly. The root ball should neither dry out nor stand in water.
CompostHumus-rich, structurally stable and well drained.Water reserves and air in the root zone need to work together.
FeedingDuring growth, according to need and product instructions.A small pot uses up reserves faster than good garden soil.
ContainerChoose enough space, good stability and a clear drainage outlet. The clump broadens and becomes heavier over the years.
PruningRemove dead or old canes close to ground level.New canes renew the plant; cut tips do not grow back.
WinterProtect containers and check moisture on frost-free days.Evergreen foliage can also dry out in the cold season.
Leaf signalsAssess curled leaves alongside soil moisture and weather.Drought, heat and frost call for different responses.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

A grass with a distinctive effect on space

Bamboo belongs to the grasses, even though its canes become woody. In Fargesia rufa, the effect comes from many fine leaves and a softly arching habit. The species originates in China and retains its foliage in winter under suitable conditions. Clump-forming means that new canes appear around the existing rootstock. It does not produce the long wandering runners of many other bamboos; the whole clump can nevertheless broaden noticeably.

Build a green area with young plants

The shop offer contains two plants, each in a 17 cm pot and approximately 60 cm in total height. They provide a starting point for a planting, rather than a mature privacy screen. Allow generously for their future position: Fargesia rufa can reach roughly three metres tall and needs room to the sides. Close spacing that looks dense straight away increases later competition for water and nutrients. For container growing, we therefore choose volume and stability according to future development.

Partial shade makes care easier

A sheltered, bright to partly shaded position suits the fine foliage. Sun is possible with an adequate water supply, but a heated wall with dry wind is more demanding. On terraces, it is worth looking at conditions throughout the day: a spot that is pleasant in the morning can become very hot in the afternoon through reflective surfaces. To create a peaceful seating area, bamboo does not have to stand directly in front of every window; beside a bench or as a side boundary, it works equally well.

Get water to the roots

In a container, check not only the surface but also moisture deeper down and the weight of the pot. Water slowly so that it reaches the entire root ball. Keep the drainage outlet clear. Rolled leaves can respond to heat, drought or frost; they are not an unambiguous instruction to water immediately. If the soil still feels wet, look for the cause first. Newly planted clumps need particular attention while establishing roots.

Encourage new canes and thin out old ones

Humus-rich, structurally stable soil with good water retention provides the foundation. Feed moderately during growth without exposing dry roots to a concentrated solution. Old or dead canes can be removed close to ground level. A cut cane does not simply continue growing at its tip like a woody shrub; rejuvenation comes from new canes emerging from the rootstock. For a natural shape, thin selectively rather than frequently shearing the whole plant into a rigid outline.

Evergreen also means a need for water in winter

Check soil moisture on frost-free days, especially beneath roof overhangs. Frozen soil can prevent water uptake despite moisture being present, while sun and wind put pressure on the leaves. Insulate the sides of containers and place them in shelter without blocking drainage or air circulation. A heated living room is not suitable winter accommodation. After winter, first wait to see which canes resume living growth before radically removing every detail that looks brown.

Good to know

Does Fargesia rufa need a rhizome barrier?

As a clump-forming bamboo, it does not produce the widely wandering rhizomes of typical running species. Space for the clump’s gradual widening is still necessary.

Is 60 cm its final height?

No. That is the stated delivery height including the pot. An older plant can grow considerably larger.

Why do its leaves curl?

This can happen with drought, heat or frost, among other causes. Check the root ball before adding more water.

Can I overwinter the bamboo in the living room?

A heated living room is unsuitable. A sheltered outdoor position with appropriate root protection and monitored winter moisture is better.
