Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightPlace in very bright light without unaccustomed hot sunshine.Multicoloured foliage needs a suitable bright position.
WateringLet the top layer of compost dry somewhat, then water evenly.Alternating air and moisture is better than persistent wetness.
DrainageRemove water from outer pots and hanging covers.Hidden wetness damages roots.
CompostKeep loose, structured and well drained.Fleshy leaves do not replace an airy root environment.
NutritionFeed moderately during active growth. The amount follows the growing medium and product.
Trailing shootsProvide room for them to hang freely.Long shoots must not catch on doors or handles.
Flowering sitesLeave healthy old flower stalks in place.Later flowers may use the same sites.
WinterKeep bright, warm and without cold draughts.Less growth changes water requirements.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

Colour lies in long, narrow leaves

Wayetii Tricolor brings a different line to the collection from round-leaved wax plants. Its narrow, fleshy leaves show green areas, pale cream portions and, in young foliage, pink too. Not every leaf looks alike, and colour changes as it matures. This lively combination is exactly what makes the plant interesting. Its shoots may fall loosely over the edge of a bright shelf. The hanging pot offered measures fourteen centimetres; the stated starting size is around twenty-five to thirty-five centimetres excluding the hanger. Longer shoots developing later are normal growth, not a reason to overlook the small starting format.

A bright position lets the markings show

For the multicoloured foliage, I choose a bright position with filtered daylight. A deep, dark shelf interior is unsuitable even if the outer pot’s colour matches perfectly there. Strong, direct summer sunshine behind glass is not suddenly imposed after transport. The plant can gradually become accustomed to its position. Pink young leaves are not automatically a sign of deficiency, and pale leaf areas are not made green with extra fertiliser. Healthy new growth is what matters. If it becomes very thin with large gaps, the available light is considered first.

Get to know the container before watering

Between applications, the upper compost may dry somewhat. How long this takes depends partly on warmth, brightness and growing medium. I occasionally hold the pot and connect its weight with a careful moisture check. A light rootball after several warm days differs markedly from a heavy pot in a grey autumn. Fleshy leaves provide some reserve, but severely shrivelled foliage is not deliberately awaited. Watering by the calendar alone poorly suits a plant living under different conditions in each room.

A hanging pot must not be a closed water container

During watering, the nursery pot receives water evenly and then drains. A decorative hanging cover is attractive, but easily hides leftover water. I therefore check its bottom once more before rehanging. An outer pot on a shelf likewise stays empty beneath the nursery pot. Shoots are not trapped during moving or used as carrying handles. For a hanging plant, a fixing suited to its later size is worthwhile. Long shoots must be kept away from doors, drawers and frequently moved items so that the attractive trailing growth is not constantly damaged.

Repot loosely and feed moderately

A structured, free-draining mixture gives roots air while still retaining enough moisture for their needs. During repotting, I first check the existing rootball. If a change is necessary, only a little extra room is offered. An enormous pot with lots of long-moist compost is no shortcut to a larger hanging plant. Feeding is moderate during active growth and follows the product’s instructions. Existing nutrition in fresh pre-fertilised compost is taken into account. Lengthening shoots do not automatically mean more nutrients are needed; their natural direction of growth contributes too.

Do not cut every tip when flowers appear

Wax plants may later surprise with their distinctive flowers. The foliage effect is complete even without flowering, however. A fixed flowering date or guaranteed flower count would not be a sound promise indoors. Healthy flower stalks remain after flowering because they can be used again. They are therefore checked more closely before pruning. If individual trailing stems reach an impractical length, they can be shortened selectively without indiscriminately cutting every fine tip. A plant with buds receives conditions as consistent as possible. Constant relocation makes development harder to assess.

Assess changed leaves in context

An older leaf may eventually fall. If yellow or soft leaves instead become frequent, I check compost, drainage and temperature. A wet rootball by cold glass needs a different answer from missing water in a very warm room. We avoid several major changes at once so that the cause does not disappear amid the confusion. In winter, the plant stays bright and frost-free while watering follows its actual consumption. The scene shows one possible bright shelf position. The unchanged offer photograph beside it makes starting growth and actual shop size clear.

Good to know

Why are new leaves pink?

Pink tones may belong to young, multicoloured foliage and change as it matures.

Does every leaf stay equally colourful?

No. The distribution of green, cream and pink varies.

Does it suit a dark shelf?

No. A shelf position needs sufficient daylight.

Is it a hanging plant?

The shoots can trail and need free space for this.

Does it need constantly moist compost?

The top layer may dry somewhat; standing water is avoided.

When are flower stalks cut?

Healthy old flowering sites are kept rather than removed after every flowering.

Are hanging container and outer pot part of the scene?

The decorative cover shows an arrangement. Only the shop offer specifies what is included in delivery.
