Your care table
| Topic | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Position bright and filtered. | Do not hide the compact crown in a shelf. |
| Warmth | Cultivate warm, frost-free and draught-protected. | Above about 15 °C makes sense indoors. |
| Moisture | Water according to need after some drying. | Dense leaves sometimes hide wet earth. |
| Drainage | Let drain and empty the cover. | Do not permanently saturate roots. |
| Soil | Use loose permeable houseplant soil. | Roots need air and moisture. |
| Support | Accompany bushy growth without an unnecessary moss pole. | Atom is presented here as a compact form. |
| Fertiliser | Dose moderately by label in growth. | Supplies follow new foliage. |
| Winter | Keep warm and reassess consumption. | Slower drying needs attention. |
Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.
Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.
Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.
Atom stays a compact leaf crown in the picture
Young green leaves stand close together with wavy, partly lobed margins. Different tilts create a moving surface although the plant looks compact. An open bright shelf gives this small crown a good position. Atom is no long vine on a moss pole here. The original shows a dense bushy philodendron whose leaves emerge from a low centre. A plain container lets glossy surfaces work without crowding growth with decorations.
The trade name stays linked to the specialist profile
The shop names the plant Philodendron selloum Atom. The RHS lists it as Philodendron Atom and gives the shop name as a synonym. The offer stands in a 12 cm pot and is described at about 25 to 30 cm total height including pot. The RHS gives up to about 50 cm cultivar height under suitable conditions. This later guide is separated from delivery measurements. Carry the pot when unpacking and free trapped stalks gently rather than pulling open the compact crown.
A shelf needs light directly at the crown
Bright filtered or indirect daylight suits indoor cultivation. Do not put it deep behind books where only the foreground is bright. Avoid sudden hot sun after transport. Even warmth above about 15 °C and shelter from cold draughts simplify care. Observe the support and any nearby heater too. The attractive compact foliage is not maintained by placing the plant as dark as possible. Healthy new leaves need a genuinely suitable place.
Look through the crown to the roots
Before watering check upper soil and container weight. Supply slowly after some drying and let surplus drain. Dense growth must not allow water to stand unseen in a cover. A soft old leaf is judged together with soil and stalk base. Further watering is not the first measure with heavy wet roots. Equally, do not dry the plant entirely for long merely because leaves look strong and glossy.
Few interventions and suitable supplies
Permeable houseplant soil with loose structure supports roots. Move slightly larger only with space needs and supply moderately by label during growth. An additional moss pole is not automatically required for this compact form. Constant clipping is not normal care either. Fully dead parts can be removed specifically. Wear gloves when cutting. The plant is harmful if eaten and sap may irritate; children and pets should not reach it. Flowers are not presumed in the young offer.
Observe the crown through winter
Atom stays warm and frost-free indoors. Roots may dry slower with less daylight; check again before continuing a former rhythm. Remove dust with supported leaf surfaces and a soft cloth. Look for scales and fine webs too. A top view in the plant book shows how new leaves supplement the crown. Margins need not all be equally lobed. Development, leaf age and angle belong in comparison rather than treating every different leaf as a fault.
