Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightBright and indirect.Dark foliage still needs enough light.
WaterLet the upper root-ball area dry noticeably, then water thoroughly.Slow-growing plants often use water modestly.
ChecksCheck pot weight and moisture beneath the surface too.A dry surface may conceal a wet centre.
DrainageAllow all excess to drain.Permanently wet roots may rot.
CompostLoose, structurally stable and freely draining.Root space needs moisture and oxygen.
FeedModerately during growth according to product instructions.Feeding does not cure a standstill caused by insufficient light.
WinterBright and warm, without a cold pot base.Less light usually means longer watering intervals.
GrowthAllow to trail or attach loosely to a support. The offered short shoots may gradually lengthen.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

Almost black green on a firm leaf surface

Scindapsus treubii Dark Form stands out with very dark glossy leaves. Depending on light, they appear deep green to almost black. The leaf surface is not velvety and does not show the typical silver spotting of Scindapsus pictus. The pale treubii form traded as Moonlight is different too. The species comes from parts of Southeast Asia and belongs to the arum family. Its relatively quiet growth needs patience. A strong glossy new leaf after good root development is a more useful measure than as many long shoots as possible in a short time.

Short shoots are not a tall finished hanging plant

The offer states a 12 cm pot and around 10 to 15 cm per shoot. This describes the length of individual shoots and must not be read as the overall height of a large plant. A small bright shelf with room for leaves is sufficient initially. Later, shoots can trail or be guided onto a suitable support. Leaf number and arrangement vary naturally. Decorative containers and long hanging vines in example images are not guaranteed unless expressly included in the current delivery contents.

Dark leaves need a bright position

Dark colouring does not make this plant a solution for a dim hallway. Bright indirect light supports healthy new growth. Avoid hot direct sun initially after shipping. Consistent warmth suits it; cold window surfaces, cool draughts and an outer pot cooling down in winter can cause problems. Normal to slightly higher humidity suits it better than dry heated air. Good ventilation remains important. The plant does not need a display cabinet constantly covered in condensation to develop its characteristic foliage.

Monitor moisture rather than water preventively

Scindapsus treubii tolerates more noticeable drying between waterings than very thin-leaved tropical plants. Check moisture beneath the surface and pot weight. Once the upper layer has dried well and the root ball is noticeably lighter, water thoroughly and let drain. Do not add small quantities daily while the interior remains wet. Conversely, it is not a desert cactus whose root ball should stay dry for weeks. With little light and in winter, watering is usually less frequent. Remove any hidden remaining water in the outer pot.

Develop roots and shoots gently

A freely draining, structurally stable mix and drainage holes help supply oxygen to roots. Repot only when necessary, for example with a well-rooted root ball or collapsed compost. An oversized reserve pot often dries too slowly for a small plant. During active growth, feed moderately with suitable foliage fertiliser according to product instructions. Tie shoots loosely to a support. Carefully wipe dusty firm leaves with a damp cloth. Their natural shine does not need leaf-shine products.

Patience, regular checks and safe handling

Temporarily little new growth after moving may be connected with acclimatisation. Extra feed fixes neither insufficient light nor cold wet roots. With limp leaves, check the root ball first before adding water. Inspect leaves and axils for scale insects, mealybugs or other pests. For vegetative propagation, use healthy stem sections with a node; an individual leaf without a node is not enough for a complete new plant. Irritating calcium oxalate crystals mean it is not intended for eating. Keep out of reach of nibbling pets and small children, and clean hands after pruning.

Good to know

Is Dark Form a Scindapsus pictus?

This is Scindapsus treubii Dark Form with very dark glossy leaves, not silver-spotted pictus.

Does 10 to 15 cm mean overall height?

The shop figure refers to individual shoot length. The offer is a young plant in a 12 cm pot.

Why does it grow more slowly than my pothos?

Scindapsus treubii often grows more quietly. Warmth, light and healthy roots support it; extra fertiliser does not replace these conditions.

Is it harmless to pets?

It is unsuitable for nibbling. The plant contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals and belongs out of reach of pets and small children.
