Your care table
| Topic | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Cultivate brightly and sheltered. | Assess hot sunshine behind glass gradually. |
| Water | Use low-mineral water. | Choose suitable rainwater, reverse-osmosis or demineralised water. |
| Moisture | Check an accessible small water reserve beneath the pot. | Do not let the tiny culture dry out. |
| Substrate | Use suitable unfertilised carnivorous-plant compost. | Not arbitrary pre-fertilised potting compost. |
| Feed | Do not apply normal flowering-plant supply. | Nutrient salts can harm. |
| Surface | Carefully watch dominant accompanying moss. | Small shoots should receive light. |
| Renewal | Gently continue a colonised portion when culture has developed. | Do not immediately dismantle every new plant. |
| Records | Record flowering, division and actual seed formation separately. | Blanchetii is not self-pollinating. |
Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.
Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.
Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.
Flowers stand like fine dots above the pot
Utricularia blanchetii catches the eye with delicate pale violet to pink-violet flowers on thin stems. The green plant layer underneath remains very low. The original shows exactly this contrast: a small pot, little height near the soil and a light flower shape above. Enlargement helps make the fine forms perceptible at all. It does not turn the plant into a large orchid. The shop name contains an extra t; Kew’s accepted name is Utricularia blanchetii. Both spellings therefore remain understandable in the portrait.
The pot belongs to a terrestrial carnivore
The offer states a 9-cm pot but no confirmed delivery height. The name bladderwort does not mean this species must be kept as a freely floating pond plant. Its small trapping organs sit in the damp substrate zone, catching tiny organisms living there. There are no large snapping traps on flower stems. Carry the container carefully and position it so water level and surface remain accessible. A decorative outer pot should not conceal these small everyday checks completely.
A bright position without a hot surprise
A bright sheltered cultivation place suits a small tropical bladderwort. Watch especially in summer how hot the container becomes behind glass. A tiny green surface dries there faster than the entire room climate suggests. Acclimatisation makes more sense than immediate harsh midday sun. Plan for frost-free continued cultivation; a Brazilian native range does not promise winter hardiness. Do not keep the plant permanently under large leaves shading its little shoots either. The position should preserve the whole culture, not simply display violet dots attractively.
Low-mineral water keeps care simple
The substrate remains reliably damp. A small accessible reserve of rainwater, suitable reverse-osmosis or demineralised water supports this culture. Check it before empty and keep container and surroundings clean. Ordinary houseplant fertiliser is not adopted from a flowering-plant routine. Excess nutrient salts can damage terrestrial bladderworts. Suitable unfertilised carnivorous-plant substrate is better than arbitrary pre-fertilised potting compost. Fine flowers are no reason to feed heavily for fear of flowering ending.
The small surface needs new growing room
Terrestrial bladderworts can benefit from fresh suitable substrate in time. With sufficiently developed culture, a small colonised portion can carefully be transferred to a new container. This is no invitation to take a newly arrived plant completely apart at once. Do not compress fine green shoots or pull them out as supposed ordinary root clumps. Dominant accompanying moss should not completely shade the small plants. Choose an overview and a flower close-up for the plant book so later records show more than surrounding greenery.
A flowering pot is no unlimited lifespan promise
Kew describes the species as annual. An individual culture’s lifespan is therefore not generally promised as evergreen and permanent. The ICPS also points out that blanchetii is not self-pollinating. Flowers alone do not automatically mean available seed. Record development, successful division and any seed formation separately. An old weakening pot does not simply receive more fertiliser as supposed rejuvenation. This interesting small plant world is easiest to understand when leaf surface, flowers and cultivation condition are observed together.
One plant, several views
Good to know
Must it float freely in an aquarium?
No. This describes a terrestrial bladderwort species in damp substrate.
Where are the traps?
Small suction traps lie in the substrate zone and catch tiny organisms.
Are blanchetii and blanchettii two assortment plants here?
No. Blanchetii is the specialist spelling; the associated shop name contains an extra t.
Can I use flowering fertiliser?
Not as an ordinary routine. Nutrient salts can damage this carnivorous-plant culture.
Does every flower automatically produce seeds?
No. The ICPS describes blanchetii as not self-pollinating.
