Your care table

TopicWhat to doWhy it helps
LightKeep very bright and increase direct sun gradually after shipping.Young green ribs should grow compactly without abruptly facing strong radiation.
Moisture checkDuring growth let roots dry completely; check weight and moisture under grit.A dry surface tells little about lower roots.
WateringWhen needed water roots, let drain freely and empty the outer pot.The body stores water; standing wetness can damage roots.
SubstrateUse free-draining stable cactus mix with mineral content.Air and reliable drainage matter more than decorative gravel.
RepottingIf needed in spring, choose only slightly larger and the same depth.Extra unrooted soil stays moist long; keep the green base visible.
FeedingOnly during active growth give cactus fertiliser sparingly according to instructions.A slow cactus needs no forced high nutrient supply.
WinterKeep bright and frost-free, largely dry during dormant growth.Less light and activity mean lower water use.
SurfaceDo not polish skin; leave areoles and inspect new cottony deposits.Small areoles are normal; extra loose deposits may call for pest inspection.
1. Check moisture

Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.

2. Water slowly

Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.

3. Let it drain

Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.

A green star with an uncovered surface

With Nudum you first notice what is absent: no widespread white flecking covers broad green ribs. Light moves straight across smooth skin, outlining edges. Originals show a little five-ribbed body like a softly rounded star from above. Only individual pale areoles sit on rib lines. They belong to the plant and do not contradict the name “naked”. Nudum here denotes the named unspotted horticultural form of Astrophytum myriostigma, not an extra species. Rib count and form need not be perfectly identical on every specimen. The calm green surface makes small differences especially visible.

Let the young body settle quietly first

The offer gives a 6.5-cm pot and around 6–8 cm total height including pot. Approximate age of three years describes the shop plant, not flowering maturity. Hold the nursery pot when unpacking and check firm seating. Ribs are broad but skin should not be compressed or creased on an edge. Remove loose crumbs gently and initially place bright with some protection from sharp midday sun. Do not repot, fertilise and water heavily together. First see whether roots remain moist. An open position with visible pot rim makes checking much easier than a deep decorative bowl.

Increase brightness so ribs stay compact

A very bright place is crucial for this small cactus. Immediately behind a sunny pane, light and heat may rise suddenly after shipping. Begin with bright filtered light and increase direct sun gradually. Green ribs offer an observation surface: new pale or brown areas after moving deserve attention, not still more sun. A narrow unusually stretched new section instead points to unsuitable light. In summer a warm rain-protected outdoor place is possible after gentle acclimatisation. It will not retain compact growth permanently in a dark cabinet or far from a window.

In the small pot, moisture under gravel counts

Coarse grit in the shop photograph quickly looks dry. But the root ball beneath is decisive. Lift the pot occasionally and compare post-watering weight with a much lighter dry state. During visible growth Nudum receives water when substrate dries fully. Then water roots and let all excess drain. Repeated little sips can keep lower roots moist without showing above. No leftover water may stand in the outer pot. If the body softens, first check moisture and roots: damaged wet roots can also make a plant shrink. More water is not safe help then.

A free-draining root ball protects the base

Choose stable cactus mix with mineral ingredients and a pot with clear holes. Surface covering does not replace these properties. Repot most sensibly in spring when roots fill the space or substrate no longer drains well. Slightly larger containers dry more reliably than a large store of unrooted soil. Set the cactus at its previous height and keep the green body above substrate. Its base remains visible for checking. During active growth modest suitable cactus fertiliser according to instructions suffices. More feeding neither beautifies smooth skin nor compensates for missing light.

Winter rest changes the whole watering rhythm

When light and growth fall in autumn, water demand falls too. Nudum stays bright and frost-free; a cooler dry position is better than a warm dark one with summer watering continuing. During dormant growth water very little. Still observe the body regularly rather than abandoning it for months. In spring begin cautiously again as brightness and activity increase. Over many years Astrophytum myriostigma may develop from rounded body to a short column and later bloom pale yellow. No fixed final size or flowering date follows for the named form and small delivery plant. Clear juvenile shape may remain a long time.

Recognise pale points and spare the skin

Few fixed pale areoles on ribs remain in Nudum too. They need neither scraping nor polishing away. Remove loose dust carefully with a soft brush without pressing skin. Crown, rib grooves and base matter during checks: new cottony accumulations may indicate mealybugs and differ from repeated fixed areoles. New soft or dark places require root-ball, light and temperature checks. Cutting is unnecessary for a healthy form. The species propagates by seed; splitting a young single body is not a sensible beginner method. This small green star is viewed and cared for as an ornamental, not eaten.

Good to know

Why is this bishop’s cap called Nudum?

The named horticultural form has a mainly unflecked green body. Small pale areoles on ribs remain normal.

Is Nudum a separate species?

No. This describes the named unspotted form of Astrophytum myriostigma. No separate botanical species/subspecies rank is inferred.

What size is offered?

The shop gives a 6.5-cm pot and about 6–8 cm total height including pot. No fixed adult size of the form is promised.

Are all pale points a problem?

No. Small fixed areoles on rib lines belong to the cactus. New loose cottony accumulations should be checked for mealybugs.

When does it receive water again?

During active growth after roots dry completely. Pot weight and moisture below covering help more than fixed weekdays.

Does a roughly three-year-old cactus already flower?

Shop age does not guarantee flowers. The species may later form pale-yellow flowers; development, light and healthy culture remain decisive.
