Your care table
| Topic | What to do | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Very bright, increase stronger sun gently. | Pale variegated leaves also need a good position. |
| Summer | Sheltered outdoors when nights are reliably mild. | Roughly 10 °C provides guidance; avoid abrupt cold. |
| Moisture | Supply after slight drying before complete dryness. | Fine roots need dependable moisture. |
| Drainage | Remove excess and let the bowl drain. | Moist does not mean permanently waterlogged. |
| Substrate | Draining, slightly moisture-retaining bonsai mix. | Combine root air and supply. |
| Pruning | Shorten healthy young shoots specifically. | Do not make every change simultaneously. |
| Checks | Inspect leaf undersides and branch bases. | Distinguish variegation from new unusual damage. |
| Winter | Very bright and frost-free, as steady as possible. | Outdoor in the shop is not winter frost clearance. |
Check the compost and pot weight. The care table explains how far the compost may dry.
Water only when needed. The water should reach the root ball without spilling over the rim.
Remove surplus water from the saucer or cachepot. Then return the plant to a suitable position.
Pale leaf edges reveal the branches
Many small green and cream leaves sit on fine irregular branches. The movement of the woody trunk is visible between them. The variegated Serissa thus feels light without needing to form an evenly clipped ball. June snow and tree of a thousand stars are familiar names referring to possible small white flowers. The original photograph of this offer, however, mainly shows foliage and branching. A lovely name does not become a current flowering promise here. The botanical reference commonly used today is Serissa japonica; the shop name Serissa foetida variegata remains understandable.
A small root space carries a sensitive tree
The offer gives approximate age of five to seven years, a bowl roughly 15 by 11 by 7 centimetres and twenty-five to thirty centimetres total height. A small moss patch lies between trunk and container rim. Support the bowl when unpacking; delicate branches are not handles. First examine root ball and crown before changing several care steps. After transport, a reliable bright position helps more than a succession of new favourite places imposing different light and temperature conditions on the little tree each time.
Summer air is possible, winter frost is not
Serissa can stand sheltered outdoors during warm growth months when nights remain reliably mild. Bonsai Empire gives roughly ten degrees as guidance. Acclimatise the variegated crown gently to stronger sun. Choose a bright frost-free place in good time in autumn; the shop description Outdoor is not clearance for unprotected winter cold. The warmer the winter place, the more important enough light becomes. Avoid cold draughts and direct heater proximity. Let the tree settle calmly without moving it immediately after every small leaf change.
Consistent moisture needs air at the roots
Check the bowl when topsoil dries slightly and supply the root ball before it dries completely. Water slowly across soil, then let excess drain. Empty the saucer. Persistent moisture without air differs from consistent supply. Consumption may fall after stronger leaf loss, so extra watering is not inferred merely from the previous leaf volume. Moss and pale leaf edges do not measure moisture below either. A wet root ball and a dry light root ball need different attention.
Fine branching may develop gently
A draining yet slightly moisture-retaining bonsai mix supports bowl cultivation. Feed during healthy growth according to a suitable fertiliser label. Long young shoots can be shortened deliberately after checking small existing flower buds. Root work stays moderate and is not an automatic immediate measure after every move. Inspect leaf undersides and branch bases too. Fine webs, sticky patches or noticeably deformed shoots deserve closer examination. Cream variegation, however, is normal; it needs neither leaf shine nor an extra fertiliser dose.
A calm winter position continues its story in spring
Serissa stays very bright and frost-free in winter; reassess actual water consumption with slower growth. Leaf fall can follow changes, but is not dismissed as harmless without checking possible causes. Note moves, leaf development and watering in the plant book. A photograph from the same direction shows whether the fine crown unfolds new leaves again. Do not remove an existing branch simply because it looks bare for a while. Only the little tree’s condition and new shoots show which next care step makes sense.

Good to know
Is Serissa foetida different from Serissa japonica?
Serissa foetida is the older name; the portrait explains today’s assignment.
Are cream leaf edges normal?
Yes. The offer describes a variegated form.
Can the Outdoor bonsai remain outside in winter?
Not unprotected. Serissa needs a bright frost-free winter position in good time.
Are white flowers guaranteed now?
No. The original shows the leafy form without a current flowering promise.
Should I water more immediately after leaf fall?
Check root ball and position first; consumption may be lower after leaf loss.
